London, June 16th 2016
Millions of students enrol in
these online courses provided
by the top institutions &
organizations
MOOCs are Massive
• No cost
• No restrictions
• No pre-requisites
MOOCs are Open
• Learn any time
• Learn in your own time
• Learn anywhere
MOOCs are Online
2008
The first course designed around the MOOC concept was
launched in 2008 by the University of Manitoba, Canada
2012
“Year of the MOOC”
“Disruptive Revolution”
“The End of the
University as
We Know It”
Arghhhhh
High drop-out rates
No credentials
Educating the educated
No business models
“a lousy product”
MOOCs then hit a brick wall as
their flaws started to emerge
KEEP
CALM
&
CARRY
ON
MOOCING
Where are we today?
We still have universities!
BUT we also still have MOOCs
What have the MOOC platforms
done to keep MOOCs alive?
MOOCs have moved away
from their original concept of
providing free education to
those who need it the most.
You are more likely to enrol
on a MOOC if you are from a
developed country and you
already have a degree.
So, the MOOC platforms
have changed their focus to
suit this audience.

Udacity & Coursera offer mainly skills based
courses with a focus on technology and business.
Introduction of learning pathways to provide
competence in high-demand skills.
MOOCs are addressing the Skills Gap
The link to careers has helped MOOC platforms find their business models
Introduction of fees
for course “add-ons”
Certificates
Graded assignments
Mentorship
Some universities have partnered with MOOC platforms
to offer MOOCs with the option to gain university credit
MOOC Growth
2012 - 2016
The
Power
of
MOOCS • MOOCs facilitate the
distribution of knowledge
• MOOCs provide a great source
of teaching resources
• MOOCs have the potential to
address the skills gap
• MOOCs can work as a marketing
tool for the provider institutions
MOOCS:
the key to
better
education
MOOCs are providing
invaluable data on the way
people learn
This data can be used to
improve teaching methods
both online & in the classroom
The average young person will change careers 5-7 times in their lifetime
He or she is likely to have had up to 10 different jobs by the age of 42
There will be a need to continually retrain & upskill

MOOCs are ideal to address the needs
of lifelong learners.
BUT – still most people are unaware of
MOOCs.
Raising awareness of MOOCs is vital if
we are to reap their full benefits.
Many are still sceptical towards the true value of MOOC credentials.
But a positive shift in attitude will come from universities offering credit for MOOCs, and
corporates using MOOCs as a recruitment tool
