Before ERP systems, each department had its own separate software systems so data was not shared automatically across departments. This led to errors and inefficiencies. ERP systems integrated all business modules into a centralized database so data could be easily accessed and updated throughout the company. SAP was an early ERP software that improved on previous ERP systems by better integrating individual applications to enhance business performance and efficiency while also allowing for more customization compared to other ERPs. SAP began in 1972 in Germany and released several versions over the decades to become a leading ERP software.
