3) Use Primary Sources- Martin Luther King’s speech 4)Make sense of data- Google Earth 5)Design a video game-not just consume them 6)Build a Killer Robot 7)Lose Weight- Less of us, more of them 8)Direct a Blockbuster
Technology Matters! 9)Compose a Symphony- authentic problems, use real construction materials 10)Change the World- political action!
Breakout 1- SOLO-  what,  why, how, when. Making a Difference in Learning and Teaching Barbara Wenn and Heather Russell  For Learning to be successful it needs to be- focused  transferable  meaningful, purposeful and utilised Linked to other knowledge Reflected upon Sustained over time
Rubric’s Rubric’s do not come from us- the Teacher! They must be  co-constructed with the children in order for them to have ownership and deeper understanding of the learning !

Breakout 3 The Fish Philosophy. Karen Boyes Play- Have more fun than you’re allowed Be There- acknowledge people, listen to them We tell children we want them to listen but we don’t teach them how to listen! Make their Day- 5 Love Languages Quality time  Acts of service Words of Affirmation Physical touch  Gift Giving
Karen Boyes Choose your Attitude- Do you truly have a choice about your attitude? Use Humour Turning fear into fun Avoid Sarcasm
Fish Philosophy Make their Day- Use Affirmations-personal, positive,true Do you reward students in a way that suits/benefits you or them? Takes constant effort but does work. We do not stop playing because we are old, we grow old because we stop playing.  Benjamin Franklin.
Day 2  Breakout 4 Developing 21st Century Learners and Thinkers.  Karen Boyes What will learners need in the 21st Century? 1)Resist the Temptation to tell- learn through true experiences- trial and error. 2)Teach in context  3)Stop giving the final product of the thinking- never work harder than your students! 4)Problems First Teaching second- Authentic tasks

Breakout 5 Hitting the Target in the Early Years Dr Sharon Friesen- Gallieo Network Storytelling Dramatic Arts and Literacy Start with children own stories- acting out, using voice, facial expressions  Children demonstrate their understanding of storytelling when they become the characters Take photos and put themselves into picture as character
Storytelling Honours Tradition and Culture Children record their voices and replay in order to self correct and give feedback Rubric- What makes a good story? What makes a good speaker/listener? Assessment for Learning is Essential in an Inquiry Classroom!

Breakout 7 Competencies for the 21st Century… Mark Treadwell Consider- What is the purpose of school in the  21st Century? The Key Competencies are at the centre of  Curriculum What is an Achievement Objective? Mixture of concept, context and content.

Final Speaker Wise Learning Journeys: Treading old paths and new Highways.  Margaret Carr Wise Learning Journeys include recognising possible selves. Mediocre Teachers = Mediocre Students Students growing their potential and turning ability into action.

  • #3: Innovation, collaboration and quality education, these themes ran strongly thru the whole conference- in Breakouts, workshops spotlights and Keynote speakers. Also being creative, passionate and inspired.
  • #4: You can lead a child to the internet but you can’t make it think!
  • #7: Well I was off to a great start with this Breakout as it made SOLO finally make sense! This was about SOLO and Rubrics Use Life cycle story
  • #9: Braincaps- put on you can think to your computer. Going to the edge of your thinking Google how well do you know it, use it? Wonderwheel? Timeline? Googlesquared, wave, translate?Push the buttons have fun! Hoe innovative are you- in actions not just in words?What evidence do u have of this? Whats the most innovative educational practice you’re ever observed? Best Practice, Next Practice, Zest Practice- energy and pizazz, inquiry generated, co-creating and evolving, losing sight of the shore.
  • #12: Treat people always how you would like to be treated, care about and for them
  • #13: Humour many benefits- releases endorphins, improves mental health, increases retention, positive climate
  • #15: Many elements of the course we did at Fairfield college with Karen but excellent to remind and refresh 1)2 sins- activities and coverage, coverage at the expense of learning 2)Why am I learning this? Must make sense to them and have meaning Why do I need to know how to read? Ask STAFF 3)Who decides what is important to learn in your class? Empower children what do you want them to leave Insoll with? 4)Use skills in context- science-school rubbish analysis, saving coastal land Sometimes we teach what we need to learn!!!

  • #20: … establishing the competencies as the central core of the new curriculum The NZ Curriculum is considered one of the best frameworks in the world Children now have less competencies than before must specifically teach them C have poor decision making skills- more/too much choice Concepts become contexts- can be applied anywhere Learning to drive is a concept then it becomes a context when u can drive anywhere Personalised learning relevant to C
  • #21: Intuition is the teaching of body language- have to teach this to children Our world view interprets our future KC take a huge amount of time and effort but worth it Rubric KC’s with C Teachers must understand the purpose of the KC’s
