Started with a series of meetings among those we could find who expressed interest; now ready to grow!
Goals of this group Community-Building & Interdisciplinary Collaboration Organize a regular seminar series on social computing topics across disciplines Develop a common directory of relevant courses Explore the idea of a graduate minor Explore student funding (e.g., NSF IGERT)
Upcoming Activities Meeting the last Thursday of each month About half of these will be outside speakers Ben Shneiderman (U. of Maryland) on 2/24 Amy Bruckman (Georgia Tech) early next year Others Outside speakers will have 1-2 days of activity Lunch with graduate students Meetings with faculty and research groups The other meetings will be internal Internal speakers Other activities
Upcoming Activities (cont’d) Use e-mail list, website, etc. to promote other activities of interest E.g., talk by Gloria Mark on March 7 Small committees to work on other goals Course directory Graduate minor Funding

Hi. Hi there, folks. I’m Timothy Oleksiak and I am a second-year Writing Studies doctoral student. I am very much looking forward to being a part of this group. I research theories of technological resistance particularly related to first-year writing. I make sense of these issues through theories of political economy with an emphasis on the critiques of neoliberalism.

Network Evolution Macro-Level Evolutionary Dynamics: How does a network’s global structure change over time? Structure of the whole network E.g., density, connectivity, distance, structural cohesion Micro-Level Evolutionary Dynamics: What local rules govern network participants’ choices of when and with whom to form or dissolve ties? Based on local network configurations - E.g., dyads or triads Local processes, decisions, actions Xi Zhu, Department of Sociology Questions: How do networks evolve over time? How do evolutionary dynamics operating at different levels relate to each other? Empirical cases: Interorganizational alliance networks, friendship networks, collaboration networks, etc.

I research theories of technological resistance particularly related to first-year writing. I make sense of these issues through theories of political economy with an emphasis on the critiques of neoliberalism.

  • #51: Hello, I’m Kelsi Dayle Anderson and I’m a Master’s candidate at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs in Science, Technology, and Environmental policy. My interest lies in promoting public engagement, specifically towards environmental policy, through science communication and education. At the Institute on the Environment’s Dialogue Earth program, I am developing a methodology to identify the characteristics of *this* subset of news stories with the goal of then using those findings to guide scientists’ engagement with the public. “This* subset of news stories is particularly interesting because they “make it” in both the traditional and emerging media, thereby reaching the largest audience. This research will form the basis of my thesis, which I’m beginning this semester and plan to defend in next December.
  • #66: I want to let you know that the majority of the research that I’m going to be citing is not my own . I’m sharing the work of others who have been studying technology use, learning and social media – and it’s a huge field – and some who have looked at parents. In my own lab we have ongoing research and planned research on 1) how and which parents use which technology for parenting, a baseline survey , 2) we’re evaluating existing online sites for parents – MN Parents Know, JITP, 3) we’re going to be creating social networking, geomapping technology for parents related to locating and sharing information about activities for young children, and 4) we’re looking at professional parents educators’ integration of technology . From use to product to evaluation to integration in practice. Perhaps if I run into you in a year I’ll have some of our results to share. You may have noticed the survey on your table . This is part of a study – looking at community-based educators’ attitudes about technology If you would fill it out during the talk, I’d appreciate it. There’s an information sheet on the table that tells more about the study. It’s optional of course, but I’d love your voice and experience to be considered in the research. Thanks very much.
