The Two sides of people

I CAN
 I CAN’T
When the I CAN’T takes over…

 I can’t do it
 I can’t deal with it
 I can’t afford it
 I can’t get it all done
 I can’t imagine it
 I can’t learn it
 I can’t get it
 I can’t handle it
When we get stuck we say…

 It’llnever work
 We’ve never done it like that before
 It’s not possible
 It won’t matter
 Its too much trouble
 Why bother??
Heroditus

Words into action…

 Become aware of what you are doing
 Acknowledge what you are aware of
 Choose to change your behaviour
 Make plans that work
 Commit to that plan
 Follow up and follow through
Taking charge…

 Determination

Editor's Notes

  • #3: First of all what do we mean by instrinsic / extrinsic? Intrinsic – From the Latin, meaning, Inward – also means, Inherent, something that is within ourselves, something that belongs to us, usually changes that we make, that we feel we have control over, Extrinsic – Originating from the outside; external, from the Latin meaning outward, not really belonging to the thing with which it is connected; not inherent
  • #4: Change in our marital status – Intrinsically, we make decisions about our relationships, we may decide that a relationship such as a marriage is not working and insitigate change such as divorce, we also instigate change such as seprartion and reconcilation. Health – We all at some point in our lives try to improve our own health, exercise, eating more healthily, taking up a sport, swimming etc. Family – Intrinsic change here could be deciding to have a child, adoption, fostering, making important decsiins about our childrens welfare, looking after a disabled or elderly relative, we make decisions to do these things, although circumstances can sometimes leave us with little option but to act. Relocation – Moving away to another town or city. Career / Job Changes – From time to time we change our jobs, move sideways, upwards, downwards, follow aspirations etc . Personal development – We make intrinsic choices about going to college, studying, doing a course, joining a gym, learn something new, enter into something that will develop us personally. Social activities – We make choices to join a club, society, watch the football, go out with friends, there maybe external factors, e.g. living in rural area, financial contraints. Purchasing something – Buying something for ourselves is usually within our control, depending on what we buy, talking more about non essential items, we all need to buy food, clothes, spend money on electricty, water and gas etc.
  • #5: Health – Sometimes our health is affected which we have little or no control over, e.g. a physical illness. Financial – We sometimes can experience little control over financial circumstances which affect our lives, for example, if we are fined for breaking the law, we night get a fine, we can decide to not pay it, but that will come with consequences etc. Environmental – We mostly can chose where we live and set up home, but we cant change the weather, the amount of greenery in our streets and parks, the emissions from traffic etc – though we might campaign locally or nationally for change. Governmental – The government impose upon us regulations, laws etc and dictates to us how we should live, behave and govern our everyday existence, education, environment, law and order, financial markets etc. Natural disasters – We don’t have much control over floods, fires ( to an extent ), tornadoes, earthquakes etc – we might decide not to live on a fault line maybe! Technological – What control do we have over new technology?, we live in a quick fire technological world, that is forever evolving, we do however have the choice to adapt to it, embrace it or leave it altogether depending what our needs are. Organisational – At work we don’t have as much say over policies and procedures, these are normally set by Managers and senior people within companies, although tokenistically we maybe involved in some decision making. Revolutionary – By this we mean uprising, social upheaval, revolt etc, we might be part of it but largely its our of our personal control – its not happening within us individually.
  • #10: Recognise any of these??
  • #13: I am talking about personal change here……..
