Understanding Audiences self assessment
TASK 1: Audiences and Star Trek
I think my research into audiences and how they’re
determined was pretty well done. I’d done a good job of
displaying information on demographics and income
brackets, as well as how they determine the potential
audience for a film. I think I could have explained what
psychographics are by means better than a quote.
However, the table afterwards showed each demographic
(mainstreamers, aspirers) rather effectively.
When it came to Star Trek, I talked about the series more
extensively than how they’re actually marketed to
audiences. My research on why people like Star Trek
was also not very extensive. I think that when it came to
showing the films before the reboots, my table showed
when each one was released well, but not very much
beyond that. In fact, I focused more on fan reactions to
the reboots. I do think that I provided some good
information on how the reboots were marketed and how
much of a challenge it would be. I think I did a very
effective, extensive analysis of a trailer for the 2009
reboot movie.
TASK 2: Genres and Authorities
I’d chosen the thriller and action genres because while they have
both have some level of suspense, they have different means of
conveying it. I’d had a consistent colour scheme of black and
white; black for thriller and white for action, but it made some
of the slides look bland.
My conventions of thriller films focused on cinematography and
how the camera is used to make the audience uneasy, whereas
with action films I focused on characters as well as the
marketing and production aspects.
In the iconography section, as well as highlighting tropes of
each genre effectively, I also showed certain examples which
were made famous by certain movies. I also created collages of
iconography of both genres.
I’d also added notable films and directors of both genres. This
wasn’t entirely necessary, but I just felt like adding it to show
which the most famous examples are.
When it came to the trailer analysis, I decided to use the final
trailer for Gravity, a late 2013 thriller because I liked it ever
since I saw the first trailer for it back in August 2013. I think
that my analysis was very in-depth, but when I’d had trouble
with placing and resizing screenshots as well as the arrows on
the 2nd
slide of the analysis. As for the action trailer, I used a
trailer for Commando, an 80s Schwarzenegger film. This trailer
was much shorter than the one for Gravity, so it was much
easier to work with.
Information about the BBFC wasn’t too hard as luckily for me it
was mostly on their site. I am particularly happy with the table
I’d used to display age ratings, although placement of some of
the logos in the final PDF is too high.
When it came to showing how the BBFC affects genres, I’d
picked examples of movies I had seen before this, as it’d be
easier for me to recall them rather than go onto a Wikipedia
page.
Information about the ASA affects genre was harder for me to
find, as such information wouldn’t be so readily available on
their site or through a Google search. It was easier to peruse
their own ratings and ultimately I didn’t find that much
information on that subject.
TASK 3: Poster analyses
I didn’t put as much work into these as I’d hoped I would, as
both trailers are actually shrouded in darkness and leave much to
the imagination. The Commando poster, in particular was tricky
to analyse as it doesn’t give as much information about the film
as it does what would appeal to those who’d already seen it and
wanted to buy it on VHS.
The darkness on the Gravity poster does play into the movie
quite well, but once again, I’d only managed to get 4 boxes
because of this.
