According to PAGASA, about 20 tropical cyclones hit the Philippines each year, forming over warm ocean waters. Tropical cyclones are categorized based on maximum wind speeds, from tropical depressions under 64 kph up to supertyphoons over 200 kph. Most tropical cyclones in the Philippines form over warm ocean waters and tend to move west-northwest across the Philippine Sea at speeds around 19-20 km/hr.
