Analysis Essay
you will complete the following:
• Closely read a long-form, non-fiction essay provided by your instructor
• Summarize what you read, following the rules for writing an accurate summary
• Analyze how the author of the long-form, non-fiction essay built their argument
• Draft an essay that both summarizes and analyzes the text you read using strategies
presented in course materials
• Share your writing with your peers and your instructor to see how an audience reacts to
your essay
• Revise, proofread, and edit your essay according to feedback you received using
strategies presented in course materials
Grade Breakdown:
• Summary of long-form essay 20 points
• Analysis of argument 20 points
• Writing clarity/ grammar 10 points
Note: I will be grading both summary and analysis based on your use of terms and concepts from
The Norton Field Guide: Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing” (pp. 526-538) and “Arguing
a Position” (pp.157-184).
