Learning outcomes
• Explain the use of rods and marking out information.
• State the importance of using a pattern when marking out in pairs and
multiples.
• State how joints and sections are marked out on timber components.
• Mark out bench joinery products.

Rod boards
There are many kinds of ‘boards’ used within the building industry.
Rod boards (or drawings) are mainly used in bench joinery shops to
give a pictorial view of the many aspects, sections, shape, sizes, style,
and the rest of the information required to manufacture a bench joinery
product.
These can be produced on a piece of man-made board, normally only a
few mm thick for easier handling and storage.
Or these can be produced on paper so they can be easily carried,
although the drawback of paper is it can be easily torn or damaged.

CAD
Both have their individual merits and the negatives.
Nowadays, computer aided design (CAD) allows joinery companies to
design, calculate and produce the relevant documentation required to
manufacture the bench joinery product in a matter of seconds and send
it directly to a CNC machine.
You should take some time to research and produce a brief synopsis
on CAD and its effect on the building industry.

Storey height rod
This is a rod that is the height from floor to floor in the case of a
staircase and allows the bench joiner to work out the rise and going
required for a particular staircase.
It can also be the height from the floor to the ceiling for a particular job
where storey height door frames are to be used and would become the
rod board with the height of the door opening, thickness of the transom,
distance of the borrowed light opening ( Borrowed light, the glazed
panel above a full height door frame that borrows light from the room to
lighten up a dark hallway) and the thickness of the head.
It can also be used to mark off items such as cornice, picture rail, dado,
light sockets, radiator tops and other items within a house or building
that all need to be at the same height above or below the datum.

Gauge rod
Used to mark out the line of bricks and the thickness of the joint in any
given wall. It can be carried from job to job and it will always give a
constant and regular wall dimension.

Advantages of using rods
• Many sizes, shapes and types.
• Can be retained, stored and reused over many years as they do not
change.
• Saves time and effort in bench joinery shops over the years as
reorders and re-makes can be quickly produced by the use of the
original rod board.
To a lesser degree, profile boards give similar information over a site
but once the trench and brickwork has been done and started the site
board becomes redundant.

Task
Research CNC, CAD and rod boards. Then consider the following.
• What are the advantages and disadvantages of rod boards and CAD?
• At what point does a company benefit from CAD over rod boards: sole trader?, 1–2
staff, 3–8 staff, or more?
• What are the cost implications for the company of purchasing CAD software and
employing the staff to interpret it?
• Is CAD impersonal?
• Do you think you could mark out easier from a rod board or a CAD design?
• Would you like to include CAD sessions in your curriculum?
• Would you feel able to set out a rod board correctly?
• As a bench joiner, do you think the ability to draw a rod board is a requirement of your
trade?
