Unit 3: Computer Systems
MAT J
PSU
(Power Supply Unit)
• AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct
Current) are important because you can
switch between both and change the current
Motherboard
• The Motherboard is the heart of the computer
and holds all the other components for
example the RAM, CPU and the Graphics Card.
• The different factors:
• ATX (Advanced Technology Extended)
• LPX (Low-Profile Extended)
• NLX (New Low-Profile Extended)
CPU
(Central Processing Unit)
• The functions of the CPU are that it helps the computer
run.
• The differences between Single core and Dual Core are
that:
• Single Core is fed strings of instructions it must order,
execute, then selectively store in its cache for quick
retrieval.
• Dual Core processor each core handles incoming data
strings simultaneously to improve efficiency. Now
when one is executing the order can be accessing the
system bus or executing its own code.
ROM
• The ROM is the Read-Only Memory and the
different types of ROM are:
• ROM
• PROM
• EPROM
• EEPROM
RAM
• The RAM is Random Access Memory is a form
of computer data storage and RAM allows
stored data to be accessed directly in any
random order.
• The different types are:
• DRAM
• SDRAM
BIOS
• BIOS is Short for Basic Input/output System,
the BIOS, ROM BIOS, or System BIOS is a chip
located on all motherboards that contain
instructions and setup for how your system
should boot and how it operates.
