Lucy: Hey! Mike are you ready to start the new semester next Monday? Mike: Not yet. Lucy: Why? Don’t you have the material required? Mike: No, I already have everthing I will need the point is that I haven’t decided the major I will choose for this semester.  Lucy: I know what you mean, taking a decision is sometimes difficult. Well, I already choose health classes, why don’t you take them with me? Mike: I’m not sure  I’d rather  not.  I’d prefer to  study something more interesting for me. Lucy: Well, let’s see.  What would you rather take? Mike:  I’d rather take  classes where I need to be competitive, friendly and perseverance. Lucy: Mmm,  would you prefer to take criminology or economics classes? Mike:  I’d prefer not to  study either. Lucy:  would your rather take broadcasting or films studies? Mike: Mmm  I’d rather not  take either. Lucy: Well It’s hard to take a decision with you. Tell me what do you prefer? Mike:  I’d prefer to take fitness or sports classes , what do you think? Lucy: that’s a great idea, you love to exercises and sports that will be terrific for you! Check the conversation and practice with a partner.
We use the modal expressions “would prefer” and “would rather” to talk about our preferences in English.  These two expression mean the same thing and are synonyms for the verb “prefer.”  Would prefer & Would rather
“ would rather” takes the base form of the verb. Check the examples: Would  you  rather take  singing or acting classes? I’d rather take  singing classes I’d rather take  another course than study singing. I’d rather not take  either.
If you had the opportunity to work oversea  would  you  rather work  in USA or CANADA? I’d rather work  in USA I’d rather work  in another country I’d raher not work  either.
Would  you  rather go  to Cancun or Acapulco on vacation? I’d rather go  to Cancun I’d rather go  to Puerto Vallarta is better. I’d rather not go  to the beach.  I’d rather go  camping.
“ would prefer” usually takes an infinitive.  If you won the lottery,  would  you  prefer to live  in Monterrey or in Teran? I’d prefer to live  in Teran is more relaxing. I’d prefer to live  in another place. I’d prefer not to live  either.
Would  you  prefer to study  film or crime? I’d prefer to study  film is less stressful. I’d prefer to study  another subject. I’d prefer not to study  either. I don’t like them.
Which career would you choose?  Would  you  prefer to take  medicine or engineering? I’d prefer to take  another one. I’d prefer to take  medicine is more rewarding. either.  I’d prefer to study  as an accountant.

We use  by + gerund  to describe how something was done: I lost weight  by doing  exercise every morning.
I got a lot of friends at college  by being  my self and  spending  time with them. I finish high school  by working  hard and  listening  to my teacher
