USING ICT
TO RESPOND, INTERPRET, REFLECT AND
EVALUATE
By Noel S Kuruvila
1
Technology offers opportunities to
 analyse and annotate texts, including multimedia texts and their
own work
 explore alternative versions of texts, both by the original author
and others
 consider the choices made during composition
 capture ephemeral responses
 devise presentations offering reflections on and responses to texts
 edit their own work easily
 create and access support and revision material and examples of
good practice
2
Text Mapping
 Coined by an English teacher, Tony Clifford.
 Visual technique to help students understand how information is organised in
content area text, especially textbooks.
 word processor provides highlighters in a large range of colours, so that different
aspects of the texts could be picked in out in contrasting shades.
 font could be changed, words could be put in a larger size, made bold or italicized.
 effects can be overlaid, so that the same word or phrase could appear with
highlighting, in a larger size, different font, in italics and bold – thus illustrating
multiple effects

Enriching the Study of Texts
 No limit to the data which can be accessed online.
 World’s greatest libraries and databases are available at our fingertips.
 Precious manuscripts, discarded drafts and mementoes can be explored.
5
Poets in their own Words
 ICT allows the student to enjoy and appreciate a text in its most fulfilling manner.
 A poem can become alive, its rhythms revealed, the stresses helping to make sense
of the words on the page.
Eg: The Poetry Archive, The Poetry foundation, Moving words etc.
6
Exploring the Sub-text
 Flexibility of the electronic text makes it possible for students to explore the sub-
texts.
 Subtexts can be inserted in the text, and can be differentiated using the various
colour and font schemes available.
7
8
A Cartoon Approach to Alternative
Interpretations
 The potential of ICT allows interactivity and collaboration
 A cartoon or a storyboard might help the students to grasp the idea quickly, as well
as to help them understand the concept better and clearer.
9
Getting the Picture
 “One picture speaks more than a thousand words”
 Multisensory experience.
 A softcopy of an image means that it is flexible for editing and mapping.
10
11
Moving On
 Recreating digital content is made easy
 Allow the students to engage further with the study materials
 The students will be able to exploit their creative side to the most.
12
Online Reading Journals
 Enhancing the component of response in the class environment
 Sharing personal logs and journals with the class will prove beneficial in a
multidimensional manner.
 Will pave way to a more inclusive classroom environment.
13
The Popularity of Podcasts
 Audio files available in internet for downloading and subscribing.
 Convenient, thought provoking and captivating.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts
https://podcasters.spotify.com/
14
Editing for Beginners
 Class improvisation and role plays can be captured and transferred into soft copies,
so as to be edited and reviewed easily.
 Audio and video editing makes it easy for the students to isolate and categorise
relevant information from the vast and endless database.

15
Quick Recap
 The chapter analyses how ICT is effective in responding, interpreting, reflecting and
evaluating in an academic scenario.
 Text mapping helps us to highlight and amplify important concepts in the text
 ICT can be used to enrich the text by adding to the resources from the world wide
web.
 Audio files helps us take the learning to the next level.
 Sub-texts are important, and are made easy to be conceptualized using ICT tools.
 Pictures and Cartoons makes the learning process easy and deep rooted.
16
 ICT enables the students to recreate and modify content, for their own
convenience.
 Personal logs and journals are made online, hence making them shareable and
accessible.
 Podcasting is one of the upcoming and convenient tools for educating oneself.
 The role of video and audio editing in academics is impeccable.
