What is  Certification? Certification represents a declaration of a particular individual’s professional competence   In some professions certification is a requirement for employment or practice Doctors, mechanics, accountants, surveyors and many others are all required to go through a certification process of some kind 
IT Certification Professional certifications in computer technology or IT business Management Earned by those who have achieved qualifications specified by a certifying authority
Certifying Authority Vendor Neutral : Certification programs supported by a governing body not affiliated with a specific vendor (PMI, CCHIIMA, ISC² , etc.)  Vendor : Some certification programs are oriented toward specific technologies, and are managed by the vendors of these technologies (e.g., Microsoft, CISCO, etc.)
Business  Benefits of certifications This can help you decide where to focus with information technology  Have the appropriate skill sets specifically required by your organization  Certified Employees or Consultants have valuable knowledge, skills, and experience Determine who and how to train others and yourself for technology advancement  Give employees opportunities for growth and development. General Certification Qualifications Qualifications may include a combination of: Completing a course of study Achieving a specified grade on an examination  Proof of professional accomplishments and/or experience The intention is to establish   that  an individual holding a certification is qualified  to hold certain types of position within the field or to complete a task
Areas of IT Certification  Programming  – Proven knowledge of technologies such as .NET, Java, mySQL, PHP, Silverlight, Flex as well as portal technologies like SharePoint. Technological proficiency  – Those with knowledge of one or more of the major technologies such as ERP packages are in demand since firms are seeking to maximize their existing information systems or to restart initiatives that were put on hold last year (e.g., Siebel, PeopleSoft, SAP, etc.) Security  – Companies want people who can keep their information safe and secure. (CISSP ) Infrastructure and Networking  — With implementations of virtualization and cloud computing technology, firms are seeking IT pros with a blend of server, software, and networking skills. (CCNA, VMWare, Linux) Electronic medical records  — Health care firms across the U.S. are in need of IT pros with the expertise to install and support medical records software. (EPIC HIM Certification, CHDA, RHIA) IT Business Processes  – The need for this skill set is not going away. Organizations are seeking those people who understand how technology supports broader business objectives and who have the management skills to make them happen (PMP, SIX SIGMA, ITIL)
IT Certificates that are in demand According to the 2011 Salary Guide from Robert Half Technology, the following IT certifications are in demand today: Cisco–Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)  Linux–Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)  Microsoft–Microsoft Certified Applications Developer (MCAD) Microsoft Certified Professional (MCITP) Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer ((MCSE) Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)  Project Management –Project Management Professional (PMP)  Security–Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Check Point Certified Security Administrator (CCSA) Check Point Certified Security Expert (CCSE)

Project Management Institute (PMI) Certifications Project Management Professional (PMP) ® Certified Associate of Project Management (CAPM) ® Program Management Professional (PgMP) ®   PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) ®   PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) ®
PMP ®  Eligibility Requirements Education and PM Experience *Leading and directing project tasks as identified in the Project Examination Specification.  Within the total hours of project management experience, experience in all five process groups (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring & controlling, closing) is required.  However, on a single project, you do not need to have experience in all five process groups. Education Background Project Management Experience Project Management Education Bachelor’s degree or global experience Minimum three years/ 36 months  unique   non-overlapping  professional project management experience; during which, at least 4,500 hours (~30 FT weeks) were spent leading and directing tasks * 35 contact hours of formal education OR High school diploma, associates degree or global equivalent Minimum five years / 60 months  unique   non-overlapping  professional project management experience; during which at least 7,500 hours (~188 FT weeks) were spent leading and directing project tasks * 35 contact hours of formal education
PMP ®  – Certification Process Complete and Submit Application Application Review & Approval 5 business days if submitted online Audit Process  (if applicable) Applications are randomly audited PMI App & Exam Cost $405 PMI members $555 non-member
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Employers list the MCSE as a desirable title 1,035 times on Dice.com (a technology-specific jobs site), and 1,093 times on Monster.com MCSE is aimed at those who want to be system architects and analysts.  Seven-test certification  The MCSE is the most grueling of Microsoft’s datacenter-focused titles, and shouldn’t be undertaken by those with less than several years of solid administration experience.  If you don’t understand how all the network pieces fit together, you’re not ready yet to tackle this series of exams
Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Governed by a non-profit organization:  International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium  (ISC)² Candidates for the CISSP must meet several requirements: Possess a minimum of five years (or equivalent) of direct full-time security work experience in two or more of the ten (ISC)² information security domains. Health Information Management - CCHIIM and AHIMA Commission on Certification for  Health Informatics and Information Management  ( CCHIIM ) manages and sets the strategic direction for the certifications. Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Working as a critical link between care providers, payers, and patients An expert in managing patient health information and medical records, administering computer information systems , collecting and analyzing patient data, and using classification systems and medical terminologies.  Candidates must meet one of the following eligibility requirements: Bachelors degree or higher from a program accredited by the CCHIIM Education and experience will be verified Exam fees: $229 Member, $299 Non-member
Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) CHDAs demonstrate  expertise in health data analysis  and the knowledge to acquire, manage, analyze, interpret, and transform data into accurate, consistent, and timely information Ability to balancing the "big picture" strategic vision with day-to-day details Candidates must meet one of the following eligibility requirements: Bachelors degree or higher  and  a minimum of five(5) years of healthcare data experience Or RHIA and 1 year of healthcare data experience Education and experience will be verified Exam fees: $259 Member, $329 Non-member
