Affordances

for some tasks than others.
• Affordances encourage certain behaviors, make others
more difficult.

Behavioral addictions-
A repetitive action is an addition, rather than a habit,
when the rewards it brings are ultimately outweighed
by damaging consequences.
Stopping rule
A natural places to stop and do some other activity.
Flow
A psychological state in which you lose all track of time when
accomplishing a task “the zone.”
Experienced when tackling a moderate challenge with the
skills to master the challenge.
Addictive property 1
• Goals just beyond reach
• Many of us are highly conditioned to pursue goals, even if achieving
those goals isn’t actually the best thing for us. Gives us positive
feedback, makes us feel good when comparing ourselves to others.
Addictive property 2
• Unpredictable but irresistible feedback
• We are driven to seek feedback that is not guaranteed.
Addictive property 3
• Sense of progress and improvement
• Rewards given out very liberally at the start.
• Allow people to build up some achievement, and then they are willing
to pay to avoid the bad feeling associated with losing what you have
built up.
Addictive property 4
• Tasks that become more difficult over time
• People enjoy a challenge that is just beyond reach of their current
abilities.
Addictive property 5
• Unresolved tension that demand resolution
Addictive property 6
• We are more sensitive to negative feedback than to positive
feedback.
• Ongoing social connection with others is motivating.
• kids “emotional amblyopia”
