1
WHY TO MONITOR AIR POLLUTION?
• serious problem nowadays
• emissions of pollutants affect ecosystems,
environment, human health and quality of
life
• sources of air pollution
• antropoghenic
• natural

2
WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK
• new fast evolving technology consisted of small
devices (nodes) situated in the field and the
gathering point (gateway)
• nodes are able to
• communicate with each other (short, long distance)
• communicate with gateway (basic station)
• measure chosen environmental or socioeconomic characteristics in
real time
• be distributed in high density

• used in
domain

environmental

and

socioeconomic
3
WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK
COMPONENTS
• 2 major groups of wireless sensor network
components
• hardware
» nodes (may be equipped by sensors)
» gateway

• software

4
PRE-SELECTION OF WIRELESS SENSOR
NETWORK COMPONENTS
• pre-selection steps involve:
–
–
–
–

determination of the reason of building
choosing the localization of the nodes
determination of the number of nodes
searching for the producers (analyzing commercially
offered products (options))
– defining the criteria for the evaluation of selected
options
– defining the ideal option
– comparing criteria parameters of offered options to
the ideal (suggested) one

5
CRITERIA FOR THE NODES SELECTION
• criterion is in the decision making process called a scale
and it is used for the comparison of parameters
• every criterion is evaluated by its importance
• nodes are the most important part of the wireless sensor
network
• 25 criteria, 8 groups of criteria for nodes were defined for
the wireless sensor network which will be suitable for
monitoring of air pollution in the urban area
