Javier Fernandez-Han, a 15-year-old from Houston, Texas, created the VERSATILE system to address multiple problems in a sustainable way. The system uses algae and anaerobic digesters to treat waste, produce fuel, sequester carbon, and generate food and income for villages. It provides sanitation, energy, and nutrition while reducing environmental impact. The integrated design aims to meet basic needs through wastewater treatment, biogas production, algae cultivation, and renewable power in a technologically appropriate package for rural communities.
