VIRTUAL RETINAL DISPLAY
By-Vinayak Parashar
Introduction
A virtual retinal display (VRD), also known as a retinal scan display (RSD) or retinal
projector (RP), is a display technology that draws a raster display (like a television)
directly onto the retina of the eye. The user sees what appears to be a
conventional display floating in space in front of them.

RETISSA
Retinal Imaging Laser Eyewear uses laser
technology to directly project images onto the
retina from a miniature projector. The user can
view images from an embedded camera or
digital data from external input.
It is mainly being developed as a medical device for
the purpose of supporting the visual function of
people with low vision (visually impaired but not
completely blind), who have irregularities in the
anterior part of their eyes.
Features Of RETISSA
1. Focus free i.e. image clarity is independent of individual focusing function,
refractive error, and the focal position of the eye lens.
2. Universal design like normal correcting or sunglasses, owing to small optics
inside the glasses frame.
3. Augmented reality, i.e., a digital image is augmented in the real-world
environment, independent of the focal position of the wearer since the image is
always clear on the retina.
Components of RETISSA
The eyewear is connected to the controller with a sealed line 4mm in diameter combining an optical fibre
and electric lines.
• The controller includes an RGB laser combiner module
• laser/MEMS controllers
• an image processor
• a chargeable battery
The frame includes
• the projection unit consisting of the MEMS mirror package
• the free-surface reflection mirror & collimating optics.
 Images are directly drawn from a projector by retinal scanning using
RGB lasers and MEMS mirrors
 Since the laser beam goes directly to the retina, there is no
focus(neither “conversion” nor “algorithm”).
 In other words it is independent of visual acuity (clarity of vision) and
point of focus
Working of RETISSA
Application in Low vision aid
• Focus free :Visual aid for
anterior part impairment of
ametropia and clouding.
• Projection of processed
image: Visual aid for
retinopathy by projection to
Preferred Retinal Locus
(PRL), image magnification or
compression, customized
contrast, and optimized
intensity.
Clinical Test Results
35 non-handicapped people with the age of 30-60
VIA RETISSA
X VIA Naked
Clinical Test Results (contd..)
30 cataract patients with the age of 70-90
VIA RETISSA
X VIA Naked
Conclusion of the Test
The point is that the RETISSA visual acuity is independent of the naked visual
acuity, due to focus free, and the low visual acuity can be increased up to around
0.5 not only in non-handicapped people but also in the cataract patients
Applications of Virtual Retinal Display
- Giving a speech while information is streamed to your eyeglasses in real time.
- Presenting to a crowd with your notes secretly stowed away in your eye glasses.
- Extending your everyday computing environment to include your eyewear display
- Walking down the street, seeing your favorite friends show up "on screen" 2 blocks and 1 cafe
away
- Receiving turn by turn directions as you walk toward your destination
- Reviewing messages while on the go
- Creating your personal big screen experience from mobile TV and video (occluded or escape mode)
- Seeing building schematics and locations of others (especially useful for security or firefighters)
- Viewing virtual recipes while cooking without losing your rhythm.
