LintelSteel lintel used here to hold brick façade weight off the window. The weight is pushed laterally away from the window until is can continue to the ground.
MortarMortar joint #1The Joint is troweled with ¾” width. The mortar is used on an apartment building. It is most likely medium strength type N mortar.Mortar joint #2This joint is tooled with a ¾” width. The mortar is used on an apartment building. The finer grain suggests a higher strength typeS mortar.
Oriented Strand BoardThis structural panel is a nonveneered product is made different from other plywood. The grains are not all the same direction and do not follow order like plywood.Wood strands are put together so there are no voids and compressed, then filled with a membrane that makes them as strong as plywood but cheaper and more uniform.
PlumbingFraming for tub before gypsum board.Water Closet located in attic.Plumbing vent to roof. The VTR is venting the pipe from the p-trap to the the sewer. 2 ½” drainage tubeDrop in kitchen sink made from aluminum.Lavatory with 1 ½” supply lines and a 3” waste line.
PlywoodVeneer- a thin covering of another surface.Plywood is engineered wood made from wood veneers. Veneers are laid at 90 degrees as they are stacked on top of each other to make the finished sheet. The arrow indicated the direction of the grain. This ¼” finish plywood is a good example of the A side is used.
RebarStack of #5 rebar. 5/8”Deformations in rebar are helpful for the concrete to grab hold to so they become more structurally stable.
Steep Roofing DrainageGutter- made from bent aluminum. The gutter collects rain water before it falls off the roof and directs it to the ground.Downspout- made from aluminum. The downspout collects water from the gutter carries it to the ground to be expelled. Splashblock- keeps high velocity water falling in downspout from eroding ground while directing it toward the drainage area. -This example is make of brick.
Steep Roofing MaterialsClay tile roofShingle- a thin oblong sheet laid in overlapping rows to cover a roof or house.Shingles are made from wood, slate, clay, and asphalt.Wood Shingle Roof made from cedar shingles.
Steep Roof ShapesGambrel RoofHip RoofGable Roof
Steep Roof Terms Eave- edge of the roof that usually projects over the side of the building. Fascia- horizontal trim board that caps rafter creating the edge of the roof.Soffit- fills gap between exterior walls and fascia. Soffit vents help allow air into the attic and keep air circulating, not trapped.Roof and building without fasciaRoof Ridge- highest part of roof. Usually has a ridge vent that allows trapped air in attic to escape.
StoneCoursed Rubble Pattern Random Rubble Pattern
Vapor RetarderThe vapor retarder is in place to keep water vapor from penetrating insulation. It does absorb some water keeping it off the gypsum ceiling. The bottom top would be the hot side during the winter.
WaterproofingLoosely laid waterproofing between slab and wall. The grade rises from low on the right to high on the left where this waterproofing is needed as the foundation and grade meet.
Weep HoleThis weep hole is used to help get rid of water vapor that has seeped through the mortar and brick. If it had no where to escape it would continue seeping into the building.
Windows#1Double hung windows that open awning styleThese windows are hung and hinge from the top.#2Sliding window- Both panels slide on a track to open the window.Fixed Exterior Window because it cannot open and has an immovable sash. #3.Mullions
