Web 2.0 Social Networking

Editor's Notes

  • #4: A popular Web 2.0 topic is social networking online. Social networking website users are growing at a rapid pace. Social sites resemble a community of people where you connect with old or new friends. You share and/or collaborate information, photos, videos, as the social site manages users’ content. (Networking.com, 2014) Social sites meet the fundamental criteria of the Web 2.0 definition. This presentation will support social networking as a Web 2.0 tool, and highlight its benefits and drawbacks.
  • #5: Boyd and Ellison (2007) reported the first social networking site, SixDegrees.com, emerged in 1997. However, the site’s success would not last for long; it failed in 2000. The founder believes its failure was simply due to the site being ahead of its time. From 1997-2000, dating sites surfaced such as AsianAvenue, BlackPlanet, and MiGente. Later, social sites called Ryze, Tribe.net, and LinkedIn entered the digital world to connect business professionals. (Boyd & Ellison, 2007)
  • #6: In 2002, Friendster entered the social networking scene. At this time, social networking sites were popping up left and right. Myspace entered in 2003 and grew rapidly because users of Friendster heard rumors that it would soon be a fee-based system. Friendster users spread the rumor by the means of the Friendster site influencing other Friendster users to switch. In 2004, a few college students created Facebook to connect the Harvard University student body. Soon thereafter, it expanded to reach colleges and universities all over the country. Later, Facebook opened to everyone. (Boyd & Ellison, 2007)
  • #7: As of July 2014, eBizMBA ranked Facebook as the number one social networking site with 900,000,000 users. Twitter follows Facebook with 310,000,000 users, LinkedIn ranked number three with 255,000,000, Pinterest ranked number four 250,000,000 and Google Plus + ranked number five with 120,000,000 users. (EBizMBA, 2014)
  • #8: Social sites have a profile identifying the user, his or her background, as well as a range of information the users chooses share with others. The user has control over who to “accept” as friends and what they can view and share. Groups organize your friends based on similar interests, schools, etc. (Nations, 2014)
  • #9: Discussions are the method in which users interact with each other. Blogs are online diaries. Widgets personalize your page; examples include current weather forecast or the news. (Nations, 2014)
  • #10: Social networking encourages communication between multiple users accelerating the sharing of ideas and information. It enables users to create and establish personal and professional connections. It reaches a wide range of spectators free. (Management, 2012)
