Why Use New Media? Construction Engagement Civic participation
What is a WebQuest?   A classroom-based lesson in which most or all of the information the students explore and evaluate comes from the World Wide Web.  --Bernie Dodge San Diego University
Basic Components Typically on a website the teacher creates A scenario with a question or project  Teacher pre-selects websites (lists URLs) Students use URLs to do project Usually done in groups Can take a day, a week, or a month
Example – A Woman for President?  You are part of a campaign team working to nominate and elect the first woman President of the United States. You must persuade people to vote for your candidate. Tasks Survey 5 students to determine what qualities make a good president.  Research historical women leaders Abagail Adams Harriet Tubman Rosa Parks
Products Chart 1: traits of good president Chart 2: traits of influential women in history Campaign button, poster, and speech for  chosen candidate
In a Good WebQuest Students will  take in information and transform it use judgment and creative problem-solving often use the computer  and  “real” objects to create products
Good Teachers Provide: Clear and interesting task Example of a finished project Step-by-step process High-quality list of websites  Guidelines on how to organize info Closing lesson to review info  Scoring rubric
