Website Design
Internet and the world wide web
•The growth of the internet led to
Advanced Research Projects Agency
(ARPANET )expiring officially in 1989.
•This came about because the
internet consists of various sub-
networks.
•These networks are each owned,
controlled and financed individually.

Internet and the world wide web
….cont
• The web began in the late 1980’s as a
European project .
• It proposed a system of using documents that
had links to other related documents on
various computers.
• The links could guide one from one computer
to another using facilities of the internet.

Internet and the world wide web

• The Internet refers is the TCP/IP availed by the physical
hardware (cables, computers, etc) connect of the
global network.
– TCP/P-Set of rules for communicating over ARPANet
– TCP/IP manages communication between applications
– Ensure that messages routed properly from sender to
receiver
• Error-correction
– Later opened to general commercial use

Internet and the world wide web
….cont
• World Wide Web(Web or WWW) refers to the data and
information that is made available on the global network.
• Locate and view multimedia-based documents on almost any
subject
– Early development begun in 1989 at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee
– Technology for sharing information via hyperlinked text documents
– HyperText Markup Language (HTML)
• Defines documents on WWW
– Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
• Communications backbone used to transfer documents across
WWW

Getting Information on the WWW
• Use of URL which shows the location of then
Web.
• The hypertext links emanating from a Web
page provide built-in associations to other
pages.
• Search engines allow users to state the kind of
information they hope to and then furnish
information that hopefully relates to that
description.

Internet and Web Browsers
• These are programs that help to read web
sites .
Example, Internet Explorer, Firefox, mosaic,
Safari, Google Chrome, or Opera.
• The only type of information that web
browsers are guaranteed to be able to display
are HTML files.

Internet and Web Browsers
• To access data on the internet needed one to
be conversant with many commands.
• In 1993, a new web browser called mosaic
was developed.
• It enabled users to access the internet via a
GUI.
• The transmission of sound and video over the
internet was enabled.
