This document discusses different definitions and meanings of strategy. It outlines five different ways to think about strategy: as a plan, a pattern, a position of advantage, a perspective or fundamental way of doing things, and as a ploy or trick. Strategy can be both the intended plans that organizations make for the future, as well as the realized patterns that emerge from their past actions. An effective strategy mixes both planning ahead and learning through adaptations. It should also consider an organization's ability to predict events and need to respond to unexpected changes.
