Wireless vs mobile computing
Wireless Communication
“WIRELESS” refers to the method of transferring information b/w a
computing device and a data source without a physical connection, i.e.,
without the help of wires, cables or any electrical conductor.
Example – Between Personal Data Assistant (PDA) and an agency
database server.
What is wireless computing ?
 Wireless communication ---
Data communication without the use of landlines.
It involves cellular telephone, two-way radio, laser or satellite communication…
Types: IR communication, satellite communication, Broadcast radio etc.
Here the computing device is continuously connected to the base network.
Wireless vs mobile computing
Mobile Communication
“Mobile” refers to a computing device that is not restricted to a desktop.
A mobile device allows the user to complete computing tasks without being
connected or tethered to a network.
Examples --- a PDA, ‘Smart’ cell phone, Web phone, Laptop computers…
What is mobile computing?
 Mobile or ‘Untethered’ computing ---
The computing device is not
continuously connected to the central or the base network.
 These devices may include PDAs, laptop computers, Smart phones….
 They can communicate with a base location with or without wireless
connection.
