Editor's Notes

  • #3: Talk about recent trends of social media growing and the importance of utilizing it as a networking tool. Talk about success stories of people using facebook. I use a story of a friend posting on their status that they are looking for a job and numerous job leads within a day. I’ve also used a story about contacting people I haven’t talk with for awhile and getting a construction job lead for a friend. You can go through twellow.com to find people who are in your area of interest.
  • #4: We cover this more in depth in other presentations. A brief explanation should be sufficient.
  • #6: Both links are hyperlinked. Click on weddles.com and look up some possible associations that people in your group could get involved in. Walk the job seekers through how to do this.
  • #7: Go into volunteers.utah.gov and show examples of how there are opportunities for all types of job seekers. You can even research opportunities for accountants and it will give numerous options. The utah.edu link is also a valuable tool. University of Utah consistently has one of the top 10 volunteering programs amongst colleges in the nation. Talk about volunteering for companies the job seekers are targeting. This has been shown as a great way to get your foot in the door with companies like IHC.
  • #10: Talk about the importance of setting goals. If the thought of networking intimidates them then start small and work their way up. Making a list of 10 contacts and starting to contact on person on the list per day is an easy way to start. Again taking someone out to lunch could be an easy way to lead into talking about job opportunities.
