All rights reserved. 2 of 8 Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying Dense and lightweight blocks The relationship between the dense concrete block and the lightweight block is easy to understand: • The heavy block is designed to be strong and in general also designed to be covered over with render of some form of cladding such as plastic or timber. • The lightweight block is much lighter than the dense block. It is designed to insulate a property (i.e., to trap the warm air generated in the house). .

The cavity is two skins of walling, one outside and the other inside the house. The main reason for this is to keep the property dry. • Cavity walling uses bricks from dense engineering to soft clay. Blocks used in cavity walls range from dense concrete to lightweight; all have their own purpose and use.
