PROJECT URBAN PROTOTYPING
International Workshop II Collaborative Planning and Design
Date: Tuesday 15 November 2011
Venue: SDE Conference Room - on 3rd
floor
Time: 09:00-15:30
Synopsis
The Project Urban Prototyping is intended as a preparatory exploration to develop the proposal
for the establishment of the Laboratory for Urban Prototyping. The project will explore the
possibilities to establish a collaborative environment for design, planning and management of
climate smart urban areas by the application of advanced virtual prototyping technologies.
The exploratory study Urban Prototyping acknowledges the following approaches:
I Exploration of the state-of-the-art
II Identification of the user needs, and conceptualization of the basic architecture, for an
urban prototyping system
III Strategic partnerships
IV Qualified proposal for the next step: Laboratory for Urban Prototyping
In the first stage, indicated as Exploration of the state-of-the-art, the study envisions external
workshops with international experts:
Workshop I Virtual Prototyping
Workshop II Collaborative Planning and Design
Workshop III Planning and Design Process
In Workshop II Collaborative Planning and Design international experts are invited to discuss the
possibilities of and experiences with digitally supported approaches of collaborative planning and
design of climate smart urban areas.
Main research question of Workshop II Collaborative Planning and Design:
What are the demands of urban planning and design with regard to collaborative processes?
Which kind of collaboration is needed in view of the increasing complexity of urban
development?

International key note speakers
Jim Plume
As a full-time research student Jim Plume start developing one of the first prototypical CAD
systems that explored the notion of constructing digital models of buildings represented as
assemblages of objects with embedded knowledge about materiality and relationships between
the building parts, a technology now known as building information modeling (BIM). From 1999
through to 2001, Jim Plume served as Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) at University of
New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, Australia and then from 2006 to March 2010, served as
Head of the School of the Built Environment.
Current research relates to the application and development of industry standard exchange
formats to support all-of-life design, delivery and management of buildings through the
maintenance of a full 3D model representation of the design, supported by a shared building
information model hosted on an object model server. A particular application of that concept is
to support collaborative design processes in the building industry.
Erwin Heurkens
Erwin Heurkens is a PhD researcher at the Department of Real Estate & Housing, Faculty of
Architecture, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. His PhD research on Private
sector-led urban development project focuses on the way public and private actors collaborate
and manage urban projects in the market-driven context of the Netherlands and United
Kingdom. This research is expected to be completed by March 2012. Erwin Heurkens currently
teaches the RE&H Master education courses Management Fundamentals and Urban
Regeneration in the UK, and is the co-author of the book The Urban Decision Room: an urban
management instrument. His main academic interest focuses on international comparative
research of urban development practices, and the theoretical development and practical
application of urban management instruments.
