E. EXPLAIN
A book review is an objective and comprehensive

It assesses the book's content, style, and relevance
to the field it covers.
Book reviews provide potential readers with an
insight into the quality, content, and significance of
a given book.
Parts of a Book Review
A book review has an introduction, a summary
of content, an analysis and evaluation of the
book, and a conclusion.
Introduction
The name of the author and the book title and
the main theme.
Relevant details about who the author is and
where they stand in the genre or field of inquiry.
The context of the book and/or your review.
Your thesis statement.
Summary of the Content
For nonfiction books like biography, history, and the like:
pay primary attention to the major points (the argument)
the author is putting forth and to the sources the author
has drawn upon to back up his/her point of view.
For fictional works such as novels, chick lit, graphic
novels, manga: Pay attention primarily to the novel or
book’s setting, plot, style, characters, theme/s, use of
language and voice.
Analysis and Evaluation
Your analysis and evaluation should be organized
into paragraphs that deal with single aspects of
your argument.
Includes description and reactions to the book.
Respond to the author’s opinion and analyze it.
Explore issues the book raises.
Conclusion
Relate your argument to other books or authors.
Relate the book to larger issues.
Tie together issues raised in the analysis and
evaluation.
Briefly restate your main points and your thesis
statement.
