Journal #1 -- How would you define the word family?
I. The importance of familiesWhat is a family?Group of 2 or more people who care about each other and are committed to each otherA family is the child’s first connection to the worldFamily is one of the best gifts – to love and be lovedProvides a safe environment from which to exploreGives a sense of belonging
II.Typesof familiesA. Nuclear familyGroup of 2 generationsFather, mother, at least 1 childSome include adoptive children as well as biological childrenSome include foster childrenVary in size & structure
B. Extended familyFamily group including relatives other than parents & children with single householdWoman raising 2 grandsonsSometimes refers to additional relatives household who give emotional support
C. Single-parent familyConsists of one parent & 1 or more childrenNever marriedDivorceDeath
D. Blended familyConsists of married couple & at least 1 child from previous relationshipStep-parentingWhat kind of family do you belong to??
III. Family life cycleSeries of stages in predictable order for familiesUsually go through the stages in the same order, just at different timesDifferences b/n families, yet similaritiesAmount of time in each stage varies
THE FAMILY LIFE CYCLEA. Beginning stageCouple establishes home & marriage relationshipB. Child bearing stagePrepare & adjust to parenthoodC. Child rearing stageContinue to work to meet changing needs – develop independence
