Introduction
• Microgrids can help campuses reduce peak demand
charges, which for some institutions can save 30%–70% of
total monthly electric charges.
• Microgrids can keep electricity flowing to colleges and
universities by islanding from the central grid during power
outages.
Objectives
• The key objectives of sustainability in electric power
generation system are:
– Reliability
– Environmental concerns
– Economic operation.
The Microgrid can supply the electricity smoothly to meet the
customer demand and ensure the reliability and proper operation of
electric power system.
Energy Management System
• In order to prevent blackouts and power disruption and to
ensure reliability and efficiency the grid needs to get updated by
making it modern and smart.
• Smart grids appeared as a solution for several problems in the
current electrical system
• Utility companies can manage and monitor energy use in every
home in real time and it will also give consumers more energy
control.
Case Study
Time Cost
Peak (7 am - 8 pm) 0.097 cent per kWh
Off-Peak (8 pm - 7 am) 0.066 cent per kWh

IIT Kanpur set to get Smart Grid
• IITK plans to install and operate three solar + storage microgrid pilots
on its campus in northern India.
• The university will monitor and operate the microgrids from a control
center on the IIT Kanpur campus.
• Synergy Systems and Solutions has supplied the facility with a SCADA
system, backed by advanced metering infrastructure provided by
Mindteck , an IT services provider based in Bangalore.
IIT Roorkee set to get Smart campus
• An ABB microgrid is set to be installed at IIT Roorkee, the oldest
technical Institution of Asia, as part of joint smart campus
development.
• It aims to create an operational smart grid network integrating all
sources of energy including diesel generation and renewable energy.
• The goal is to become a self-sustaining and zero emission green
campus.
IIT Delhi and IISc Bangalore
• (IIT) Delhi, and Tata powers
have signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) to
collaborate in areas like Smart
grid Technology and Clean
Energy solutions.
• IISc Bangalore has installed a 5.2
kW solar system linked to 150 Ah
of lead-acid battery storage in a
project supported by the Sunrise
program led by Swansea
University, in Wales.
Why Academic buildings
• Innovation
• Infrastructure
• Public Awareness
• Less Complexity
• More Research and Development
Background
• Control technologies.
• Design of communication and control architectures for
smart energy grid deployment.
• Design of smart grids, with energy storage options, for rural
loads and distributed energy.
Challenges
• Managing intermittency
• Energy Storage
• Demand response
• Cyber Security
Future Scope
• Smart campuses are important in education, research
and development as well as energy optimization and
Microgrid.
• To understand how a campus can provide an
intelligent and a solid infrastructure for the Microgrid
functionalities.
• Development of distributed control and optimization
techniques as it apply to smart campuses and
neighborhoods.
Conclusion
• Microgrids are modular in structure.
• Not all generating assets need to be added at once.
• Energy cost saving.
