Networking technologies:
Low-power WAN (LPWAN)
 It is a wireless wide area network technology that interconnects low-bandwidth,
battery-powered devices with low bit rates over long ranges.
 Created for machine-to-machine (M2M) and internet of things (IoT) networks,
LPWANs operate at a lower cost with greater power efficiency than traditional
mobile networks.
LPWANs can use licensed or unlicensed frequencies and include proprietary or
open standard options.
The proprietary, unlicensed Sigfox is one of the most widely deployed LPWANs
today.
Running over a public network in the 868 MHz or 902 MHz bands, the ultra-
narrowband technology only allows a single operator per country.

 Offers better connectivity.

 The LoRa WAN is a Long range,low power wide area
open access protocol designed for long distance
communication.
 The Protocol is defined by LoRa Alliance
 Cloud based MAC layer protocol which manages
communication between LPWAN gateways and end
node devices.

Sigfox:
 Sigfox is an LPWAN technology that offers end to end IoT connectivity.
 Sigfox deploys its proprietary based stations connected to back end
servers.
 End devices are connected to base stations using BPSK modulation.
 It uses bandwidth very efficiently
 Very Low noise Levels
 Low power consumption
 High receiver Sensitivity
NB-IOT:
 It is Narrow Band IoT technology released by 3GPP in
2016.
 Uses licensed frequency bands of 700 MHz , 800MHz
and 900MHz.
 It allows connectivity of upto 200k end devices per cell.
 Uses FDMA technique and QPSK Modulation
 Consumes large power compared to Sigfox and LoRa
Cat-M1
 Cat-M1 is a LPWAN technology which supports high data rates.
 It operates at 1.4 MHz bandwidth
 Higher device complexity/cost than NB-IoT
 Cat-M1 uses OFDM modulation technique
 Wider bandwidth allows data rates upto 1 Mbps
 Provides very accurate device positioning capabilities
 Supports voice calls and mobility of devices,
 Used in wearable devices, smart vehicles. Trackers etc.

 Programmed hardware devices which form the
communication bridge for different technologies
 Creates bridge between the Iot sensors / actuators and the
Internet
 IoT gateway aggregates all data, translates sensor’s
protocol, and pre process the data before sending it.
