Discussion method
• Discussion methods are a variety of forums for open-ended,
collaborative exchange of ideas among a teacher and students or among
students for the purpose of furthering students thinking, learning,
problem solving, understanding, or literary appreciation.
• Discussion may be formal and informal. Formal discussion is preplanned
and guided by preset rules in order to achieve goals. Informal discussion
is characterized by free verbal exchanges between the participants in the
absence of preset rules.
Purpose of discussion method
Assist students to develop, express and validate their opinions
Clarify information and concept
To share information
To develop team building and social skills
To develop problem solving skills as a group
To arouse students interest

• Panel discussion is the discussion in which 4 – 8 qualified personnel sit and
discuss the topic in front of large group or the audience.
purpose
• To produce benefit for large group
• Stimulus thought and discussion and clarifies thinking
• The quick exchange of facts, opinion, and plan trends to develop critical
attitude
• To develop group opinion
Objectives
• To provide information and facts
• To analyse the current problems from different angle
• To identify the values
• To organize for mental recreation
Procedure of panel discussion
A panel discussion consist of 4types of persons
• Instructor
• Moderator
• Panelists
• Audience
Instructor: it is the responsibility of the instructor how, where, when panel discussion will
be organized.
The schedule of panel discussion is prepared by him, sometimes he has to plan rehearsal
also.
Moderator: the moderator must have the mastery on the theme or problem of the
discussion
• He has to summarize and high light the discussion more of often
Panelists: there are 4 – 10 panellists in the discussion. The members of the panellist
in semi circle before the audience
• The moderator sits in the middle of the panellist
• Panelists must have mastery of content of the discussion
Audience : after the panel discussion, audience are allowed to participate and seek
clarification
• The panellist attempt to answer the questions of the audience
• Moderator also tries to answer the question
Characteristics of panel discussion
• It is used to college and university level to organize teaching
• It develops the ability to problem solving
• It provides the opportunity to understand nature problem and giving their
point of view logically
• It helps ability to tolerate anti ideas of others
• It develops the ability of creative thinking
• It develops the manners of putting questions and answering questions
