Using the experiential learning
cycle to promote reflective teaching
             Ivan Aguilar
Our objective
 To describe the experiential
learning cycle and its application to
 promote reflective teaching.
Our expectations
 Write one or two expectations you have for this
workshop. Share it with a colleague.
            Our expectations for this workshop
  My Name

  Expectations
An experience with the experiential
learning cycle
 Now we are going to visit a teacher’s classroom
and observe his lesson. We’ll complete a series
of tasks based on our observation.
 Of course, we’ll do it artificially through a video.
Observing and taking notes
  Classroom events (What the Comments
  Teacher/Students do/say)
Video viewing
Sharing
Compare your notes and comments with a partner.
Your goal is to get as much information as possible
about the lesson you observed.
Analyzing the lesson/Creating an action Plan
          Questions Answers

          Analysis Notes
          What might students' behavior
          indicate?
          What seemed to help/hinder
          students' learning? Why? How?
Step1 How did the teacher affect the
          students' learning?
Based on what you know about
          teaching/learning a language, what
can you say about what helps
          learning?

Action Plan/ If you were the teacher…
What might you do differently the next
          time?
What guidelines can you set for yourself
 Step 2 when teaching?
What questions do you have that you
          would like to work on?
What would you like to do in your lesson to
          address these issues?
The experiential learning cycle. Matching task

                       1.Experience

            4.Action
                                       2.Description
               Plan

                         3. Analysis
To sum up
    Stage Information
    Experience
    (Classroom Events)
    Description
    What teacher and Students do
    and say
Don’t mix up the events with
    your own reactions
    Analysis
    What helped/hinder learning
    What I know about teaching
    and learning
    What theory says about
    teaching and learning
    Action Plan
What to do to overcome the
    problems/puzzles
Pointers
 The experiential learing cycle can be used for a
wide range of learning experiences. It is not only
  for classroom observation.
 The cycle isn’t necessarily linear. There are times
in which we might need to go back and review the
  information we collected.
My own action plan
 Using what you’ve learned through this workshop,
what are two actions you can take to reflect on
 your teaching?
To wrap up…
 In what ways were your expectations fulfilled?
 What’s something you would google or research
 after this presentation?
Thanks
 Special thanks to Mary Scholl.
