What is Business Intelligence?
 Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite is a complete, open, and
architecturally unified business intelligence system for the enterprise that
delivers abilities for reporting, ad hoc query and analysis, online analytical
processing (OLAP) and dashboards.
 All enterprise data sources, as well as metrics, calculations, definitions, and
hierarchies are managed in a Common Enterprise Information Model, providing
users with accurate and consistent insight, regardless of where the information is
consumed.
 Users can access and interact with information in multiple ways, including web-
based interactive dashboards, collaboration workspaces, search bars, enterprise
resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM)
applications, mobile devices, and Microsoft Office applications.
 It also Provides user data and tools to answer questions that are important for
running part of business for which they are responsible for, they are as follows:
 Determine whether business is on track
 Identify whether things are going wrong
 Track and monitor corrective actions

Why Business Intelligence?

 BI systems can help companies develop a more consistent, data-based
decision making process for business decisions (avoid "guesswork" )

 BI systems can enhance communication among departments,
coordinate activities, and enable companies to respond more quickly to
changes (e.g; in financial conditions, customer preferences, supply
chain operations, etc).

 BI system that are well-designed and properly integrated into a
company's processes can improve company's overall performance.

Data Warehousing

 Data Warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant and non-volatile
collection of data in support of management's decision making process.
 Date warehouse brings data form many sources
 It organizes data for analytical processing:
• Subject Oriented Data that gives information about a particular subject

instead of about a company's ongoing operations.
• Integrated Data that is gathered into the data warehouse from a variety

of sources and merged into a coherent whole.
• Time-variant All data in the data warehouse is identified with a particular

time period.
• Non-volatile Data is stable in a data warehouse. More data is added but

data is never removed. This enables management to gain a consistent
picture of the business.
• Denormalize Data , duplicate & flatten data structures

• Reduce Joins, reduce number of tables and relationship

Major Components of OBIEE

 Oracle BI Server
An analysis server providing a calculation and aggregation engine that integrates
data from multiple relational, unstructured, OLAP, and other sources.

 Oracle BI Admin Tool
An administrator tool used to construct repositories consisting of a Physical
Layer, Business Model and Mapping Layer, and an abstracted end-user
Presentation Layer subsequently visible in BI Answers.

 Oracle BI Answers
An ad hoc query and analysis tool that processes the data from multiple data
sources in a pure web environment. Users are isolated from data structure
complexity and they view and work with a logical view of the information. Users
can create interactive charts, pivot tables, reports, and dashboards. Analysis can
be saved, shared, modified, formatted, or integrated in the user's dashboards.

 Oracle BI Publisher
 A reporting engine able to generate reports from multiple data sources in multiple
formats via multiple channels.

 Oracle BI Interactive Dashboards
Interactive web architecture dashboards that display required information to help
users' decision making. Access to the information is interactive, based on the
individual's role and identity. The end user works with live reports, charts, tables,
prompts, pivot tables, and graphics and has full ability to modify and interact with
results. Dashboards can aggregate content from other sources (e.g. the Internet,
shared file servers, and document repositories).

 Oracle Disconnected Analytics
Offers BI Answers and Dashboards to mobile professionals on computers
disconnected from the network. It provides the same interface for users whether
they are working in connected or disconnected mode.

 Oracle BI Office Plug-In
Automatically synchronizes information from BI Answers to Microsoft Word,
Power point and Excel.


Weblogic Server

 Administration server contains Weblogic server administration console which is
used to administer the managed server, starting, stopping managed servers.

 Administration server contains fusion middleware console, which is used to
manage/administer OBIEE 11 g components.

 Managed server contains the OBIEE components, these components are started
the “Oracle fusion middleware console”

 Starting the managed server also starts java components (through Node Manage
system components (through OPMN)

 If we want to start & stop any of the OBIEE components we do it through Fusion
middleware console or through OPMN command utility i.e. opmnctl. The location
same is D:MW1Oracle_BI1opmn bin


Oracle Process Management Network (OPMN)

Controlled by fusion middleware console, maintains the system component
processes Performance monitoring through Dynamic monitoring system (DMS)

OBIEE 11g Simple Installation

 OBIEE 11G Installation : Simple Operating system – Win XP Professional

 RAM 2GB (4GB would definitely be better) We need to have Oracle 11gR2

 Installed We need to run RCU – Repository creation utility which can be

 Downloaded from OTN. Location of the rcu.bat file in
d:bishiphomercuHomebinrcu.bat

 BI domain requires its own set of schemas (Metadata Services – MDS) &
Business Intelligence Platform (BIPLATFORM).

 Another BI domain will require its own set of MDS & BIPLATFORM. We run
RCU , to create the SCHEMAS & the TABLESPACES to which these schemas
are associated To accomplish the above we need to have SYSDBA privileges
DHCP – dynamic host configuration protocol – allows network devices to
automatically obtain a valid.

 IP address from the server. For computers having no permanent IP address

 We need to configure “Microsoft default Loopback adapter”


Installing OBIEE 11g

Once the perquisites are in place:

Oracle 11gR2 Database Having run RCU – repository creation utility
we can start with the OBIEE 11g installation

Creating new user in OBIEE 11g:
Specify the following in an appropriate browser IE/Firefox/Chrome etc

http://localhost:7001/console
enter appropriate username & password to access weblogic administration console
(Hint: can use the weblogic username and password specified during the installation
process of OBIEE 11g )


Loading SalesApp Repository

 Currently SampleAppLite_BI0006 repository is loaded

 Screen shot of the same is provided in the next slide



 In the left pane
 Expand Farm_biFoundation_domain
 Expand Business_Intelligence folder
 Select Coreapplication
 In the right pane
 Select the Deployment tab
 Then select Repository sub tab
 By default all the controls are disabled, to enable the same in order to load SalesApp
repository, we need to click on Lock & Edit Configuration to enable the controls



 Click the browse button to navigate to the repository folder & select the SalesApp.rpd

 After clicking the ok button in the update file window
 We need to click the Apply button on the top right corner of the window
 Now click on the “Activate Changes” button



 Click on “Capacity Management” tab and then select “Availability” sub tab.
 To apply the recent changes, we need to restart the BI Server
 Instead of restarting all the services , we have select the BI Server, click on the “Start
Selected”. So only the BI Server service will restart



 To verify the change, we need to open NQSConfig.ini file located at
d:MW1instancesinstance2configOracleBIServerComponentcoreapplication_obis1.

 In the next screen shot , we can verify that the Sales App.rpd has been loaded under the
repository heading.
