WSOS Features and Tools
An Overview
Introduction
WSOS is a software package developed
by Nu-Lec Industries to support their
range of automatic circuit reclosers and
sectionalisers with intelligent electronic
controllers.
 More recently WSOS has developed its
own features for which the controllers
must provide software support. 
Features
This presentation provides an
introduction to the following WSOS
software functions:
 User Defined Curves
 Automatic Data Retrieval
 Batch Change
 Configurable IOEX
 Configurable DNP3
 Change of State Monitoring System 
User Defined Curves
 This feature is two tools in one:
 Curve Viewer
 Curve Editor
 The Curve Viewer allows WSOS users to
view standard and modified curves.
 The Curve Editor allows standard curves
to be edited or new curves to be created
graphically.
 This feature requires WSOS 4.14+ 
Curve Viewer Overview
The Curve Viewer is designed to show
graphically how a protection curve’s
shape is affected when curve modifiers
are applied.
 Phase and Earth protection settings can
be modified in WSOS and the changes
viewed straight away.
 Other curves can be displayed on the
same graph to allow comparisons with
settings for other trips on the same or
other reclosers. 
Viewing Curves
 To view a protection curve it is
first necessary to select a
protection group and a trip
number/type from within WSOS
to display the Trip 1, 2, 3, 4,
Single Shot or Work Tag

User Defined Curve Editor Overview
The curve editor is a Microsoft Excel
based application launched from within
WSOS.
 It is used to edit user defined protection
curves by typing values into a table or by
dragging individual points on the graph
itself.
 Built-in functions allow the curve to be
manipulated around a selected point on
the curve.
 Range functions allow the curve to be
modified across a number of points. 

Automatic Data Retrieval - Overview
Automatic Data Retrieval allows selected
history files to be automatically uploaded
from selected switchgear during pre-
determined time periods on a regular
basis.
 The current status of the upload
procedure for each switchgear can be
displayed by WSOS.
 If WSOS can communicate with the
switchgear this feature can be used.
 A level 50 WSOS licence is required for
ADR. 
Automatic Data Retrieval Screens
There are three ADR screens that are
launched from the Customise menu.
 Option Configuration
– Select which data you want
uploaded from each device.
 Switchgear Selection

Batch Change
Batch Change
The WSOS Batch Change feature allows
remote users to make changes to critical
settings in a group of automatic circuit
reclosers and/or load break switches
where these changes are deemed
necessary due to expected events such as
bushfires or storms.
 The required setting changes for each
switchgear device can be configured in
advance at the remote WSOS computer
and the changes for all devices executed
with a single command or at a
predetermined time. 

Input/Output Expander Module (IOEX Module)
Input/Output Expander Module (IOEX Module)
The Input Output Expander (IOEX) card
enables easy interfacing of additional
external equipment to Nu-Lec’s Pole Top
Control Cubicle (PTCC).
 This module allows the power utility to
connect items such as external
protection relays or an RTU as required.
 The IOEX has:
 12 optically isolated inputs and
 8 voltage free output contacts. 
IOEX Standard Map Inputs and Outputs
 Standard Mapping has 8 used
inputs and 4 spare
 Some inputs have logic
conditions applied
 Standard Mapping
uses all 8 available
outputs.
 Output 8 operates
according to
applied logic. 
Inputs
Outputs
IOEX Standard Map Inputs and Outputs
 Up to 8 outputs
can be configured.
 Each output can
be configured to
operate for a given
status.
Outputs
 Output 1 Switchgear Tripped
 Output 4 Lockout
 Output 8 Maintenance Required 
Configurable IOEX
Custom maps can now be created for an
IOEX card and loaded into a CAPM
directly from WSOS.
 The types of actions that can be mapped
to each input or output is dependent on
the software version loaded in the
CAPM.
 When the tool is started the user is
asked to input the software version.
 This is then used to retrieve a valid set of
points to use when constructing logic
within the tool. 

Configurable IOEX Scope
The Configurable IOEX tool allows WSOS
users to generate custom I/O mappings for
an Input Output Expander Card (IOEX).
 Logic can be applied to each point with up to
five sets of logic or “actions” for each input
and one trigger action for each output.
 The Configurable IOEX Tool can only create
mappings that are compatible with CAPM
software versions 027-07.xx (CAPM 4) and
527-07.xx (CAPM 5) or higher.
 The Tool can be used to read mappings from
previous versions of software but can only
create files for use with the newer software
versions. 
Distributed Network Protocol (DNP3)
Distributed Network Protocol (DNP3)
DNP3 is a communications protocol
commonly used in the Electricity Supply
Industry for the control and monitoring of
switchgear devices.
 The Nu-Lec DNP3 implementation allows
users to interface their controllers to a
SCADA system with a DNP3 master station.
 The implementation includes a standard map
of points for this purpose.
 Binary Input Points
 Analogue Input Points
 Counter Points
 Binary Output Points
 Analogue Output Points 
Standard ACR Map
Configurable DNP3
Custom DNP3 maps can now be created and
loaded into a controller directly from WSOS.
 The mappings and I/O logic are created using
the tool and saved to a DNP3 mapping file on
the WSOS computer.
 Once a valid file has been created, it is linked
to the switchgear device configuration in
WSOS and written into the controller.
 The types of actions that can be mapped are
dependent on the software version loaded in
the Switchgear Devices controller.
 When the tool is started the user is asked to
input the software version.
 This is then used to retrieve a valid set of
points to use when constructing mappings
within the tool. 

create mappings that are compatible
with CAPM software versions 028-01.xx
(CAPM4) and 528-01.xx (CAPM5) or
higher.
 The Tool is available with WSOS 4.20 or
later and will work on Microsoft Windows
98, NT4, 2000 and XP. 
Change of State Monitoring System
Change of State Monitoring System
The Switchgear Monitoring System is
used to setup and operate a Change Of
State reporting system for Nu-Lec
switchgear using modems and radios.
 This tool allows the user to configure
switchgear devices out in the field to
automatically dial in and report abnormal
conditions.
 Network operators can respond to
reported events locally or be contacted
automatically if they are not in the office.
 Automatic notification options include
e-mail, recorded messages over a phone
system or through a pager. 
The monitoring system
requires a level 60

must be
capable of
WSOS
communications
with the PC
Communications
could be via
radios, landlines,
GSM phones
etc.
In Call-Out mode,
operators can be
notified by SMS or
pager.
On call operators
can also receive a
voice message via
phone
Automatic E-mails can
notify engineers of any
alarms that have been
generated
WSOS Configuration
Monitoring System Configuration
 Each device to be monitored by the
system needs to be configured so the
Monitoring System knows how to
respond whenever a defined event
occurs.
Action Profiles
Action Profiles are used to define what
action the Monitoring System will take
when an event is reported by the
switchgear device.
 The action can be E-Mail, Dial Out
(phone), SMS/Pager message, A
combination of the above
This action will occur after a
set time period has passed
without the condition being
acknowledged locally at the
WSOS PC itself. 
Monitoring System - Summary
The monitoring system can be used in
two ways – locally or callout.
 When used locally an operator is at the
WSOS computer and responds to
abnormal conditions using WSOS.
 If the callout mode is being used the
WSOS computer is left unattended and
the system reports abnormal conditions
by sending e-mail, SMS messages,
Pager messages or recorded messages
over a phone. 

  • #44: The IOEX card has been engineered for safety and reliability. It is designed to mount into the PTCC radio tray and is provided in a fully sealed enclosure with a cable for connection to the Control and Protection Module (CAPM). The inputs and outputs of the IOEX are fully configurable using CAPM software V27+.
  • #48: The mappings and I/O logic are created using the tool and saved to an IOEX mapping file on the WSOS computer. Once a valid file has been created, it is linked to the switchgear device configuration in WSOS and written into the CAPM. The IOEX Configuration tool is intended to be used Off-Line only. Mappings are created, saved and linked to a WSOS switchgear device configuration while disconnected from the switchgear. Once these tasks have been completed the user connects to the device and writes the new mapping into the CAPM along with the switchgear device configuration.
  • #55: The types of actions that can be mapped are dependent on the software version loaded in the Switchgear Device’s controller. When the tool is started the user is asked to input the software version. This is then used to retrieve a valid set of points to use when constructing mappings within the tool. The Configurable DNP3 tool is intended to be used Off-Line only. Mappings are created, saved and linked to a WSOS switchgear device configuration while disconnected from the switchgear. Once these tasks have been completed the user connects to the device and writes the new mapping into the controller along with the switchgear device configuration.
  • #59: For the Remote Monitoring system to work there must be communications devices installed and configured. The amount and type of devices required depends on how the Remote Monitoring system is to be used. At the minimum there must be a device for communicating with the switchgear being monitored. Communications hardware must first be installed in the computer in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. They are then configured within WSOS in the usual way, see the WSOS help file for communications hardware setup information. The main exception to the standard setup is when you are using a communications device to send Pager/SMS messages. In this case the TAP protocol communications settings need to be setup in the Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol Configure dialog screen. See section 3.1.6 for a description of TAP settings.
  • #60: When the system receives an abnormal condition from a switchgear device a wave file is played through the computer’s sound card. Click the “Select Wave File” button to choose which file is played. This may be the standard message supplied by the manufacturer or it may be a message you have recorded yourself. Navigate and select the file then click the “OK” button. Test the message is the correct one by clicking the “Test Wave File” button. The “Time Between Sounds” text box is used to enter the time delay between each message. The message is repeated after this period until all abnormal conditions have been acknowledged.
  • #61: The Switchgear Setup dialog defines what events will be reported as abnormal conditions within the Monitoring System and what actions will be taken as a result. What exactly needs configuring depends on the type of switchgear device, what notification method is defined in the action profile (phone, e-mail, or SMS/Pager) and which events need to be monitored. The callout groups will display different conditions depending on the type of switchgear selected. For example, if a Load Break Switch is selected there will be “Mechanism Locked” and “Mechanism Unlocked” points available in the Operator Settings Callout group.
  • #62: Multiple Action Profiles can be defined. Each profile can be used by any number of devices. For example, you may want to assign one action profile to Reclosers located in substations and another for Load Break Switches. Only one action can be defined per device. It is not possible to assign a different type of action depending on which event the device reported.
