This document provides instructions for creating Excel formulas and tables that can be used for engineering calculations in both office and field settings. It describes downloading pre-existing formulas from websites, creating your own formulas in spreadsheets on a desktop computer, and then syncing the spreadsheets to a mobile device using Briefcase so they can be accessed and used outdoors. Examples of various engineering formulas for electrical, mechanical, volume, and other calculations are included.

- 1. EXCEL ENGINEERING FORMULAS FOR OFFICE AND FIELD USE I’ve used a small electrician’s handbook by Ugly that contains several different typical tables, codes and formulas for everything from basic electricity to the more complex engineering formulas used. There are several tables and formulas scattered out over the Internet for other mechanical and electrical applications. One of the best overall I’ve found is the Convert-me.com where you can get several formulas by category. Some of the websites are interactive, allowing variables to be entered and do the calculations for you. Unfortunately they’re mostly based one standard unknown only and require an Internet connection to access. Some the websites allow downloads to spreadsheet format -.xls or .xlsx depending on the age of the formula and program used to generate it An easy way around this is make your own. You can develop spreadsheets on a desktop where it’s easy to work and format the columns to fit a mobile device. The one on this page started out with an electrical basic, Ohm’s Law, and was expanded to include the entire realm of calculations you see in the circle below. It’s new and a “work in progress.” Each one of the formula groups was also copied onto an individual sheet. Here is an example of amps (I) = V/R with known volts and resistance in ohms on sheet #5. All cells are locked, except the variables, to prevent form and formula corruption by entering data into the incorrect location. This is single phase only, adding three phase Power later.
- 2. As elementary as Ohm’s Law may seem, it’s useful for troubleshooting single and three phase electric resistance heaters. Briefcase is a one-time drag-and-drop setup. Any modifications to your boilerplate files on the desktop will automatically update on the next sync session. If you want to save any of the work on the desktop or mobile device, do a Save As new file first and work from there. The photo on the right is an HTC Touch Pro 2 phone with Windows Mobile 6.1 and MS Office Mobile. Two Android tablets are running Kingsoft office.
