• What is housing shortage?
• Can you describe the nature of
housing shortage?

What is housing shortage?
• Insufficient housing is available to
accommodate the population in that
area.
• Results in large scale homelessness.
• Presence of slums and squatter
settlements.
–Temporary, unauthorised housing built by
settlers as shelters.

Lack of safe shelter
• Shelter protect against the weather elements
– Strong winds, cold temperatures
• Slum houses are badly built.
• Materials used are cheap and poor.
• High tendency to collapse due to natural
disasters
• High tendency to be destroyed in accidents.
