Editor's Notes

  • #2: Introductions: Talk about background What people will be learning. How to get interviews Networking Takes about 90 minutes for the class Have fun Please ask questions Will learn the basics
  • #3: Be willing to share not only money but of yourself. Continue networking while you are working Look for opportunities to network at store, golf, traveling, standing in long lines. While networking always ask “how can I help you” Join groups and associations. Not only networking groups, but also special interest groups. IEEE, Project managers There are a number of on-line networking groups.. Twitters, Facebook, and LinkedIn.;
  • #4: LinkedIn is a great tool for networking. Both for personal use and professionals. Three degrees of separation based on same concept as 6 degrees of separation. Creation of profile is important to allow contacts to search and find you. Associated with Profile is references, education, picture, groups and introductions. Introductions allows direct contacts to introduce you to second or third level contacts Many recruiters search LinkedIn for potential candidates
  • #5: Allow students to connect with me or just join LinkedIn. Talk about free, and paid subscriptions Consideration of privacy, contact levels, and you will be searched by others. Create your initial profile
  • #6: What job are you looking for?? Use title Talk about pros and cons of photo. Spend a few minutes on education. Most people exaggerate their education. Recommendations: 4-8 Groups and Associations. Important topic for meeting people.
  • #7: Important topic Use info learned in Step # 4 to enhance networking capability.
  • #8: Market yourself by increasing your visibility.. Add connections by inviting people to be a direction contact. Create website url, Include your website on business cards, and emails to friends and colleagues. Ask questions. You get 5 introductions free. Discuss techniques to not use up introductions.
  • #9: Search for: People. Names may not be enough. May need to insert company names or other keywords. Perform job search. Same as other job boards. Advanced Search. Very powerful tool.
  • #10: Explanation of job boards where current job s are listed. Remember only 20% of all job are posted. If you find a job on a job board it is better to go to company website and apply. Keeps paperwork from nesting from server to server. Research company while at the website. Generate target list of companies. Can find list of companies on Company task bar. Industry and location. Call friend or colleagues for help on what companies culture, working conditions, and overall morale of the people at the company. Research companies on internet/library, and LinkedIn Join associations, group, special interest groups 80% of the jobs are not posted.
  • #11: Preparing for interviews: Check on company and people. Important to have information concerning interviewers before attending interview. Good to have in your arsenal for creating a collaborative interview.
  • #12: Briefly go over some of the applications. Not important to get into details. Most people may not even use some of these features. As most people use LinkedIn more they can become more aware of the utility of these applications.
  • #13: Contact hiring managers – ideal Invite friends and colleagues out to lunch. Ask about the company, culture, working conditions, morale, management. Many jobs are not posted Always do good and share with others. Doing God's Will.
  • #14: Any final questions? Be sure to come back next week for the next class in improving your job search skills or for one-on-one coaching. Please take the survey on-line when you get home and give us your feedback!
