A Widget Guide

The document provides descriptions of various widgets that can be added to sites in the VLE. There are 23 widgets described, including widgets for text, files, media, polls, quizzes, forms, forums and more. Each widget is briefly described in 1-2 sentences explaining its functionality and purpose. The widgets allow various content, tools, and interactions to be added to sites to enhance teaching and learning activities.

- 2. 2 Appendix A: Widget Guide Text Activity. When added to a site forms part of an assignment activity. A teacher places instructions for the student in the widget and then the student submits the response back to the teacher. Link to File. Creates a download link to a file, such as an Excel or Word document. Linked files must be stored on the VLE. MoE RSS Feed. Displays the MoE RSS feed. This is refreshed every 10 minutes with any new information. There are 3 sections – KPM, JPN & PPD. There are no settings for this widget. RSS Feed. This widget allows you to place an RSS feed onto your site. This will support RSS2 and 4.1 formats of RSS feeds. Time. This widget displays the time as a digital clock. The time displayed is the same time as the PC. There are no settings for this widget.
- 3. 3 Embed Website. Allows you to embed a website so that a website is displayed inside your site. Some websites, for example Google, will not appear in this widget as they cannot be placed in a frame on another site. Phrase of the Day. Allows an inspirational quote or phrase to be placed on your site. The text can be formatted by changing the colour, font size and styling. Notice Board. Displays notices on your site. The notices are read only, but you can delete your own notices. Media. Allows the inclusion of images, videos and audio files on your site. The files can be uploaded to the VLE or linked to from Pin-Point and the FrogStore. For videos, the widget will play MP4, for audio - MP3 and images - jpg, png or gif file formats. Poll. This widget allows you to create a poll for data collection. Only one poll can be created within the widget at a time.
- 4. 4 Wall. Creates a discussion wall on your site. Allows users to leave comments on a wall. The site must be shared using the Can contribute option. Quiz. This widget allows you to create quizzes. Quizzes in My Quizzes can be edited, published or deleted by you. In School Quizzes, quizzes in here cannot be edited, published or deleted but they can still be used within your sites. Form. This widget allows you to create forms. In this widget, users are given the option of Single Line, Paragraph, Checkboxes, Multiple Choice and Dropdown for their form layout. User Info. Displays information about the logged in user. It gives the user’s name, class, school and email address. There are no settings for this widget. File Drop. Creates a window that files can be uploaded into. When used as part of an assignment a student is able to upload their work to their teacher for marking.
- 5. 5 Site Link. Creates a link on your site to any other site within the VLE that you have permission to see. Text. Used to add text to your site. The text can be formatted by changing the colour, font size and styling. App Link. Creates a link to an application within the VLE that you have permission to use. External Link. Creates a link to an external website. Linked websites open in a new window or tab depending on the browser settings. Scorm. Plays SCORM content from the VLE. Search for the SCORM package to be played and this will then play the SCORM content within the widget.
- 6. 6 Forum. The forum widget allows you to have discussions on your site with all users being able to contribute on posts that have been made. To allow users to add discussions the site must be shared using the ‘can contribute’ option. The Pond. Places a link to The Pond on your site. School Notices. The school notices widget is used by admin users to update the school notice board with events and announcements. Normally only used on the school dashboard. The text can be formatted by colour, font size and styling. Notes. Displays your reminders, to do lists and website links on your Dashboard. The text can be formatted by colour, font size and styling. Notifications. The notification widget displays all your notifications on your dashboard. Notifications from the calendar, assignments, forum and wall are shown. Calendar. Displays up to the next 15 entries from a selected calendar.
