Listening skills
Work in groups of three. One person
talks about their favourite holiday
destination for five minutes. One person
listens intently using the characteristics
we have discussed. The other person
only half listens and is less attentive.
Make sure everyone gets an
opportunity. Here are some questions
to guide your discussion:
• How did you feel as the speaker?
• How did the listeners feel in the exercise?
• What did you learn about listening and attending?
Listening and Questioning Skills
Work in groups of three’s. One person adjudicates
and two people participate. Rotate to ensure that
everyone gets a go. Have a ‘conversation’ following
these three rules:
You can’t answer the question.
You can’t repeat the question
You must stick to the same topic.
Here are some questions to guide your discussion:
What was difficult about that exercise?
Who has the power in that ‘conversation’? How did
you feel as the speaker?
Paragraphing
• Check that you understand what the other
person has said.
• Let the other person know that you are
listening.
• Move the conversation on.
Paraphrasing
• Work in threes. One person talks to the
other about the most enjoyable work
project they have worked on. What did you
enjoy about it? How did you approach it?
etc
• The other person practices paraphrasing at
different times throughout their outline.
• The third person counts the number of
times the other person uses a paraphrasing
statement. Swap so that everyone gets a go
at paraphrasing.
