Location : Jalan Tukang, Bandar Kajang, 43000 Kajang, Selangor
Function : Art Centre
Design Intention & Statement : With the exception of the traditional feature of
performing art centre - providing dance studios and audio visual rooms, Kajang
Art Centre brings back the sense familiarity for the old and sense of curiosity for
the young. All of these are the fruitful outcome of inclusion of a coffee plantation
to the Kajang Art Centre. Every Step within Kajang Art Centre is able to evoke all
the senses of the users. Contrary to the norm of art centre, which focuses on the
visual of the user, Kajang Art Centre acts as an experience hub that welcome
people regardless of their user’s background.

2.0 Precedent Study & Analysis
2.1 Roof System (Metal Cladding and Steel Frame Roof)
It is easily be found in Malaysia as it is known as a local material. Besides that, it can save costs
due to it’s life long span. Metal cladding roof has an effective thermal insulation which keeps the
indoor temperature cool. Last but not least, it blends in with the surrounding context of pitch roof.

Building Name : 38 Mews
Architect : DCA (Design Collective Architects)
Area : 300m square
38 Mews is located is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia adjacent to a
forest reserve. Passive design strategies are implemented into 38 Mews.
The ground floor is isolated as a working area away from the living
quarters.
Besides that, the sloping roof provides a double volume space that
vertically flows into the second floor master bedroom and study room.
The roof continues to slope into the bedroom itself hence stop at the
huge picture window that frames the views of the adjacent forest and
hills.

1. Roof frames are fabricated
and secured to the beam.
2. Purlins are installed with the
spacing of metal deck
length.
3. Insulation and netting is
installed, metal deck is the
screwed on top of the
purlins.
4. To prevent rain leakage,
flashing is required at joint
parts.

2.2 Structural System (Steel Frame System)
Steel framing has a higher design flexibility to suit different design needs due to its longer span
compared to timber framing system. Besides that, it’s lightweight characteristics can save up more
construction time as it is easier to install.
Advantages Disadvantages
Steel frame is very ductile. It is prone to corrosion, hence it requires
painting periodically.
It allows larger span between columns and have
a lower profile.
It has lower fire resistance.
Steel frame can be recycled and reused. High maintenance costs.
Light weight.
Reasons of Choice
Building Name : Grange Insurance Audubon Center
Architect : DesignGroup
Area : 18400m square
Grange Insurance Audubon Centre is located is located in Ohio State Capitol, Columbus, OH
43215, USA. It uses steel frame system as it’s structural system.The requirement for
adaptable space informed the choice for the center's structural system, a steel frame system
with an open web bar joist roof structure and tongue-and-groove roof deck.

2.0 Precedent Study & Analysis
2.3 Facade System 1 (Double Skin facade System)
It provides a permeable building envelope. With this, it will allow penetration of sunlight and
sufficient ventilation into the building. This is to enhance the user’s experience in the spaces.
Besides that, it can also controls the privacy yet still allowing visual connection in and out. Despite
all these, places that requires more privacy such as the dance studio can still allow partial visual
connection while remaining it’s level of privacy.

Building Name : Steel Groves
Architect : ar-Architect
Area : 274m square
The architects tried to integrate the meaning of a “wall” in the
designing process in terms of applying protection of the house from the
everyday hazard and using the most advanced construction method
they could find.
The fence of a “Steel Grove” works like the wall from Joseon Dynasty
in a more intimate scale. While the wall from Joseon Dynasty
protected its citizens from war, the fence of “steel grove” protects the
family from external hazards. The “Steel Grove” not only solves the
functional aspect of the house but also tries to create a new type of
relation with the streets of the neighbourhood. When the sun is up, the
“Steel Grove” stands out and acts as the façade. The direct sun light is
delicately scattered by the “Steel Grove” when entering the room.
When the sun is down, the lights from the rooms permeates through
the “Steel Grove” generating a different façade from the daytime. The
façade changes create a different environment for the street trough
times of the day. By doing so we tried to give a relationship between
the house and the neighbourhood.

efficiency of ventilation in and out of the buildings.

2.0 Precedent Study & Analysis
2.4 Facade System 2 (Folding Perforated Metal Panels)
It creates visual engagement from the outside due to it’s permeable characteristics. Besides that,
due to the hot and humid climate in Malaysia, the shutter facade controls the light penetration into
the building. It is also high in it’s aesthetic values due to its dynamic movement.

It’s durability increase the energy efficiency and
thermal comfort level.
Versatile problems.
Sense of aesthetic as it portrays a dynamic
movement.

Area : 1905 m square
It is located in Los Angeles, CA, USA. Its unique architectural
form and integrated function create a high performing building
that is an expression of the environmental and cultural context
in which it is built. The exterior presents itself as a perforated
metal, function as accordion shutters, allowing residents to
open and close the facade, creating a constantly changing
building front. Despite these, it also provides alternate views
inside.
