Therapy and
counselling room
These two spaces are selected for the lighting analysis of Kajang Art Centre. They are
located at the first and second floor of Kajang Art Centre. Both spaces required
artificial lightings during the night and gloomy days in order to allow the users to carry
out their activities efficiently.
Space 1 - Therapy and counselling room
Space 2 - Dance Studio
Daylight Factor Calculation
Space A : Therapy and Counselling Room
Daylight Contour
Area of windows (W, m2
) L = 2m
H = 2m
2mx2m = 4m
4m x 4 = 16
Total area of internal surfaces (A, m2
) (7.7 x 4.2) x 2 = 64.68
(7.7 X 3) x 2 = 46.2
(4.2 x 3) x 2= 25.2
64.68 + 46.2 + 25.2 = 136.08
Glass transmittance corrected for dirt (T) 0.6 (double glazed window in clean
environment)
Visible sky angle in degrees from centre
of the window

Average reflectance of area (R) 0.5
Average Daylight Factor Calculation
Average DF = 0.4947 x 51.6
= 6.06 %
Lighting Fixtures Properties
Type LED Pendant Light
Supplier IKEA
Fixture Material Powder Coated Steel
Lighting Distribution Direct Distribution
Wattage range (W) 15
Luminous Flux (lm) 1500
Colour Temperature 2700k, warm white
Room Index Calculation
Room Dimension (m2
) L= 7.7, W=4.2
Height of Ceiling (m) 3
Height of Working Plan (m) 0.8
Luminous flux of lighting (F/m) 1500
Height of luminaires (m) 3
Mounting Height (Hm
, m) 3 - 0.8 = 2.2
IES Standard illumination level 500
RI = 7.7 x 4.2 / ( 2.2 x (7.7+4.2))
= 32.34 / 26.18
= 1.24
Artificial Lighting Analysis
Lumen Method Calculation
Reflectance Factor Ceiling = 0.7
Wall = 0.5
Floor = 0.3
Utilization Factor (UF) 0.55 (Based on UF table)
Maintenance Factor (MF) 0.8 (Standard)
Room Material Reflectance Value
White Plasterboard (Ceiling)
: 0.7
White Brick Wall (Wall) : 0.5 Timber Flooring (Floor) : 0.3
Number of Fittings Required
N = 500 x 32.34 / (1500 x 0.55 x 0.8)
= 16170 / 660
= 24.5
N = 25 lamps
SMax
= 1.0 x 2.2
= 2.2 m
Therefore, distance between luminaries must not be more than 2.2 m.

Area of windows (W, m2
) L = 1.5m
H = 1.5m
1.5mx1.5m = 2.25m2
2.25m2
x 6 = 13.5
Total area of internal surfaces (A, m2
) (10.1 x 6.1) x 2 = 123.22
(10.1 X 6) x 2 = 121.2
(6.1 x 6) x 2 = 73.2
123.22 + 121.2 + 73.2 = 317.62
Glass transmittance corrected for dirt (T) 0.6 (double glazed window in clean
environment)
Visible sky angle in degrees from centre

Average reflectance of area (R) 0.5
Average Daylight Factor Calculation
Average DF = 0.4925 x 75.6
= 3.21 %
Lighting Fixtures Properties
Type LED Wireless Recessed
Downlight
Luminous Flux (lm) 1200
Colour Temperature 3500, Warm White
Wattage range (W) 10
Colour Rendering Index 80
Room Index Calculation
Room Dimension (m2
) L= 10, W= 6.1
Height of Ceiling (m) 6
Height of Working Plan (m) 0.8
Luminous flux of lighting (F/m) 1200
Height of luminaires (m) 6
Mounting Height (Hm

IES Standard illumination level 300
Artificial Lighting Analysis
Space B : Dance Studio
RI = 10 x 6.1 / ( 5.2 x (10+6.1))
= 61 / 83.72
= 0.73
LED recessed downlight are much more energy efficient compared to the traditional
halogen bulbs. The power used in LED lights are much more lesser than halogen
bulbs, while they both produced the same amount of light.
Lumen Method Calculation
Reflectance Factor Ceiling = 0.7
Wall = 0.5
Floor = 0.3
Utilization Factor (UF) 0.44 (Based on UF table)
Maintenance Factor (MF) 0.8 (Standard)
Room Material Reflectance Value
White Plasterboard (Ceiling)
: 0.7
White Brick Wall (Wall) : 0.5 Timber Flooring (Floor) : 0.3
Number of Fittings Required
N = 300 x 61 / (1200 x 0.44 x 0.8)
= 18300 / 422.4
= 43.32
N = 43 lamps
SMax
= 1.0 x 5.2
= 2.2 m
Therefore, distance between luminaries must not be more than 5.2 m.
