C-SAP legacy project: Tell us about the impact of the subject centre on your
teaching in social science disciplines

Over the past ten years, the aim of C-SAP (Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for
Sociology, Anthropology and Politics) has been to support teaching and learning within the
social sciences subject areas, and to improve the student learning experience. C-SAP has
worked towards raising the profile of teaching across social sciences by producing a number
of relevant resources, including reports, teaching guides and a manuscript series. The centre
has also offered a variety of opportunities for staff and student involvement, including an
annual tranche of mini-projects, as well as a series of events, workshops, and other activities
led by our subject academic co-ordinators and C-SAP Associates.

As of the 1st of August 2011, C-SAP Subject Centre will be moving into a period of transition.
A number of activities will occur up until December 2011, when discipline provision will
move entirely to the Higher Education Academy. As part of transition activities, we are
collecting stories of impact that the centre has had on the provision of teaching and
learning in the social sciences. We would like to encourage contributions from colleagues at
all stages in their careers who have benefitted from opportunities provided by C-SAP.
Importantly, we are not prescribing the meaning of “impact” as we interpret it quite
broadly; for instance, involvement in C-SAP events might have inspired you to re-think
elements of your teaching practice or encouraged to try new teaching techniques.

We would like to hear about ways in which your involvement in C-SAP over the past ten
years has made an impact on you, your teaching and/or your career, no matter how small
that impact may have been. We have provided some prompts below which you may use to
start thinking about the impact of C-SAP on your academic practice, however they are
merely suggestions and your contribution can take many different forms.

If you wish to contribute to the project, there are a number of different ways (deadline for
all contributions is 31 October 2011):

   - Send your account (maximum of 500-600 words) to admin@c-sap.bham.ac.uk
   - Add your contribution to the collaborative document on Google Docs by following
       the link http://bit.ly/csaplegacyproject

   - Add your contribution in the form of an audio file (mp3 or similar format, ideally no
longer than 5 minutes) to our audioboo.fm channel
       http://audioboo.fm/csaplegacyproject

   - Submit a video to our YouTube channel
       http://www.youtube.com/user/csaplegacyproject

In the spirit of sharing practice within the sector, we would like all contributions to be

guidance on this type of licensing please see the guidelines document on Slideshare.

If you ever had a funded project with C-SAP…
    • What did you learn from that experience?

   • Can you recall specific examples of ways in which your practice or the practice of
your colleagues was changed and/or challenged?

   • Did undertaking that project lead onto other opportunities?

If you had a chance to participate in events organised by C-SAP…
    • Did participating in those events help you get involved in new networks or lead to
opportunities such as publications, funding grants, collaborative projects with
colleagues outside of your own institution, discipline etc.?

   • Have there been any events that you found really influential because they took you
outside of your immediate comfort zone and challenged your approach towards your
discipline area or your academic practice?

   • Did participating in those events subsequently lead to changes in the way that you
teach or relate to your students?

If you ever used any of resources produced by C-SAP…
    • Which resources have you found particularly useful and why?

   • How has using them changed the way that you or your colleagues approach
       teaching?
