MEANING OF CODE OF CONDUCT
• A code of Conduct is a Management tool for setting out
an organisations values, responsibilities and ethical
obligations.
• Codes are typically comprised set of rules by any business
stated either affirmatively or as prohibitions. “This is
what you must or must not do”
• It provides guidance for handling different business
situations.
SIGNIFICANCE OF CODE OF CONDUCT
• A code of conduct promotes a good social and professional culture within
an organisation by demonstrating how people are expected to act.
• These codes specify about certain expectations regarding the following areas
a) Obedience to law
b) Conflict of interests
c) Insider Trading
d) Preserving Confidential Information
e) Competition and fair dealing among other things
STEPS TO DEVELOP A CODE OF CONDUCT
Assess current organisational culture
Identify desired employee behaviour
Instituting a code
Consultation Process
Implementation stage
REASONS FOR INEFFECTIVENESS OF A CODE OF
CONDUCT
Majority of employees are ignorant of the code of
conduct;
Too many inconsistencies and impartiality in
administering code of conduct have made it unsuccessful;
Lack of adequate and regular education of employees
about code of conduct affected its practice.
ETHICAL SUGGESTIONS
Companies need to be trustworthy and honest
- Impacts stakeholders, customers employees & community
- Ethics and Business go hand in hand.
Emphasize on creating an environment where people feel safe
enough to speak up
Undertake intensive research and figure out
- Which solution or action will be for the greater good of the
company
- Which solution respects the rights of everyone.
