– Speaking (S)
– Reading (R)
– Writing (W)
Types of communication skills
Receptive/Input Skills
– The Skills which are used for
receiving information are called
receptive or in put skills
– These skills are developed using
our inherent abilities like
listening and seeing.
– E.g.. : Listening and Reading
Productive/Output Skills
– The Skills which are used for
imparting or transferring
information are called
productive or out put skills
– These skills are developed
using our molded/acquired
abilities like writing and
speaking.
– E.g.. : Speaking and Writing

– Listening is one of the important skills for students as well as to
professionals.
– Listening is an inherent and inborn skill that any human being has.
– Out of the four skills of Communication, Listening is used the
highest in our day-to-day context.

Listening Skill (Continue….)
– It can be said that among all these four skills:
Listening is learnt the first (since birth)
Taught the least (almost not in classroom situations)
Used the most (45%)
– Listening, thus, is the most useful and most important skill among all the skills.
– Therefore, it is rightly said :
“ The best communicator is one who is a best Listener.”
Types of Listening:Attentive Listening :
 When you listen to something with full attention.
 It helps you in learning the fuller meaning of what is being said.
 It also helps you in retaining the information for a longer period of
time.
 For e.g.. : Listening in classroom or listening for other academic and
important reasons.
Types of Listening :(Continue….)
In-attentive Listening :
 When you listen to something without paying much attention or for
specific purpose.
 It helps you in getting the overview of the information being said.
 It helps in achieving the short-term recreational or educational goal.
 For E.g.. : Listening to music, Listening to dialogues of a movie, Listening
to the questions in a viva or classroom situations where spontaneous reply is
desired.
Types of Listening :(Continue….)
Non-Listening (Hearing)
 When a sound come to your ears and passes away without being
comprehended.
 It is absolutely involuntary. (non-deliberate)
 It can not be avoided but doesn’t affect our brain much as it is seldom
comprehended.
 It can be converted to attentive or in-attentive listening with some conscious
efforts.
 For E.g.. : Chirping of Birds, sound of blowing horn of a vehicle and any other
distinct sound around us.

What do you mean by Speaking?
speaking:
– Like listening, Speaking is also one of the important skills for
students as well as to professionals.
– Speaking is also an inherent and inborn skill that any normal
human being has.
– Out of the four skills of Communication, Listening is used the
second most in our day-to-day context.

– Speaking is learnt the second (During infanthood)
 Taught the second least (seldom in classroom situations)
 Used the second most (30%)
– Speaking, thus, is very useful and important skill in expressing your emotions and
ideas.
– Therefore, it is rightly said :
“ The best speaker can be a heart winner and mesmerizer.”

Reading for ME is…
“Reading is a process of receiving, interpreting, evaluating and
responding to the written messages”.
reading:
– Reading is one of the important skills for various academic and
information gathering purposes.
– Reading is an acquired and learnt skill in human beings and it is
absolutely absent in animals as it requires intellect and logical
inference of verbal codes.
– Out of the four skills of Communication, Reading is used the second
least in our day-to-day context.

– Reading is learnt the third (During childhood mostly in school)
 Taught the second most (often in classroom situations)
 Used the second least (16%)
– Reading, thus, is very useful and important skill in transferring others ideas
and expressions in our life.

– Writing is one of the important skills for various formal and informal
information dissemination.
– Like Reading, Writing is an acquired and learnt skill in human beings and it is
absolutely absent in animals as it requires intellect and logical inference of
verbal codes.
– Out of the four skills of Communication, Writing is used the least in our day-
to-day context.
– We usually avoid writing, unless it is extremely important.

 Taught the highest (Mostly in classroom situations)
 Used the least (9%)
– Writing, thus, is very useful and important skill in conveying various
information in different academic and non-academic situations in our life.
