This course aims to familiarize MBA students with basic computer concepts and software applications relevant to business. It will cover topics such as hardware, operating systems, spreadsheet and database applications. Students will learn through classroom discussions, hands-on exercises and case studies. Evaluation will be based on classroom participation, a term paper, and a field assignment applying course concepts to analyze the IT function of a business organization.

FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES <br />University of Delhi, Delhi - 110 007 <br />M.B.A.(Part-time) PROGRAMME(2009-12)<br />108 - Computers in Management<br />Faculty: Dr. M.L SINGLA<br />OVERVIEW<br />The role of computers in Business Organizations is assuming greater significance because of increasing pressures of diversification, competitiveness, geographical spread, complexity and human networking. The implementation of computer based systems in organizations is an uphill task which should be handled with care. This course aims at familiarizing the participants with the basic concepts of computerization with specific reference to the business environment. This course will include discussions on the software and hardware. It shall also facilitate experience building with the computers through hands-on practice. The learning shall be gradual starting from simple PC based packages such as Spreadsheets, Word' Processing and Micro Data Based Management Systems to development of a general understanding of Application Systems. This course is aimed at providing the basic framework to more advanced courses in this area including Management Information Systems, Systems Analysis & Design, Decision Support Systems etc.<br />The teaching methodology shall include classroom discussions, caselets and exercises through hands-on experience, assignments, and presentations and invited talks from industry. Classroom exercises shall be given due weightage while grading the participants.<br />OBJECTIVES<br />The objectives of this particular course include the following:-<br />To develop an appreciation of computer usage in the business context with specific reference to commercial data processing systems using PC Packages.
- 2. Facilitate hands-oil experience so as to enable the participants get over the hesitation of using the machine for text processing and data processing.
- 3. The term paper should be a commentary based on review of 45 articles related to the subject chosen. The length of the term paper should not exceed 5-6 pages neatly typed out on MS-Word or equivalent text processing software. A bibliographic list of all the articles use should be given. Copying of language from the articles should be avoided.<br />3.Field Assignment: Last Date: 19.03.2010<br />On a particular organization in business (profit or non-profit), the participant should study the operations of the organization. The IT function should be studied and evaluated on the following aspects:-<br />* hardware platform(s) * software platform( s)<br />* manpower deployed * documentation<br />* networking and * important data bases<br />* budgets for IT* Internet/Intranet applications<br />A report (15-20 meaningful pages) to be prepared and submitted to the instructor. Name and roll number of the participant to be clearly indicated. The name(s) and contact (Address/Telephone/Fax/E-mail) of the IT Head in the organization to be mentioned on the cover of the report.<br />The assignment to be concluded with a presentation/personal interaction with the instructor.<br />(No request for extension of the last date shall be entertained please)<br />
