▪ Data recognized as valuable economic asset for innovation
and growth, as national sovereignty issue, crucial resource for
AI dev.
▪ Beyond Open Data: Need to combine public, private, and
personal data to address complex challenges.
▪ Data spaces propelled to central topic in many
national/regional strategies
▪ China National Data Administration (2023), "Data Element X"
plan for 2024-2026, benefit 12 industries and fields.
▪ European Data Strategy (2020), Common European Data
Spaces as Key component, in 14 sectors.
▪ Several African countries have developed or are in the process
of developing national data and/or AI strategies.
▪ Preserve strategic initiative, as subject arriving to Africa.
▪ Symposium as platform for discussing relevance and
feasibility of data spaces in Africa.

WHAT'S A DATA SPACE?
▪ Distributed system defined by a governance
framework, enables trustworthy data transactions
between participants while supporting trust and
data sovereignty (DSSC Glossary)
▪ Structured environment for storing, managing,
and accessing data across multiple sources
and systems within an organizational, national,
or inter. context.
▪ Encompasses frameworks, policies, standards,
technologies enabling the secure, efficient,
and interoperable exchange and processing of
data among diverse stakeholders.
▪ Make data more accessible and usable while
ensuring data sovereignty, privacy, and
compliance with regulations.
▪ Data spaces operate as marketplaces, enable
data owners and service providers to receive
financial compensation for their contributions.

TECHNICAL COMPONENTS
▪ Connector
▪ Provides capabilities to finely adjust how the
data is shared, negotiates contracts and
enforces the rules set by data space
participants.
▪ Manages process of transferring data
▪ Off-the-shelf solutions, some available open
source
▪ API augmented with the trustworthy
component to handle data by implementing
