Views / Reports / Dashboards
Views and Reports
• 5.x – Limited Views
– No UI to build and deliver Reports.
– Reports are not associated to Object types
• Host, cluster, VM, etc.
• 6.x – Views
• Drag and Drop UI for building and
saving reports
• Views are Component Visualizations of
Data, based on a “subject”
Good.
Much
Better!
CONFIDENTIAL 45
• A View is the smallest component of a Dashboard or a Report
• A View is also an independent Object and can be attached to an Object of any Type
• A View can be added to many parts of the vR Ops UI, e.g. the Analysis  Capacity  Further Analysis
• Views can be created by any user with the correct Privileges
• Large number of System Views Come ‘Out of The Box’
Views Overview
CONFIDENTIAL 46
Building Reports
• Add Views to report
– Search based on View name
– Simply Drag the view to the
report page
CONFIDENTIAL 47
Dashboards
• You can have many dashboards
• You can pin a subset of dashboards to the Home Page
• You can pick one Dashboard as your default starting point
• Dashboards can interact with other Dashboards
• OOTB can be Customized
CONFIDENTIAL 48
Dashboard Management
• Import / Export dashboards
• Reorder Autoswitch dashboards
– Dashboards on the Home Page that
Autoswitch / Refresh
• Manage Summary dashboards
– Manage the dashboard used for the ‘Summary Tab’
of an Object
• Manage Tab Groups
– Organize Dashboards in Folders
• Share Dashboards
– Share out Dashboards to your teams, READ ONLY
CONFIDENTIAL 49
Dashboard to Dashboard Interaction
• Just Like Widgets you can now have one dashboard drive interaction to another
– You can choose which widgets on target Dashboard participate
– Widgets on the Source dashboard can target a different dashboard
CONFIDENTIAL 50
vRealize Operations Manager
Capacity Management
Capacity Planning and Projects
• 5.x
– Great capacity planning for vSphere
• Limited in the Custom UI
– Required configuration and knowledge; not
out of the box
– Couldn’t save What-If Scenarios
– Limited to out of box views and reports
Good.
CONFIDENTIAL 52
• 6.x
– Capacity model for all containers and vSphere
 Capacity for Heterogeneous environments
– Improved defaults, first Default Policy
Configuration flow
– Projects – Persistent What-If Scenarios
– Extensible Views and Reports for Capacity
– Alert definitions for Capacity
Much
Better!
Capacity Planning
CONFIDENTIAL 53
• New Capacity Planning Features
– Includes vSphere limits to better show the capacity available
• e.g. vSphere supports ‘x’ max VMs per host. Capacity calcs will not report a host has available room for greater than ’x’ VMs
• Capacity Calculations
– Capacity badges / metrics still calculated every 24 hours
– When adding a New Project, the Time Remaining will calculate faster (typically within 5 minutes)
• Capacity & Time Remaining Badge & Screen
– Improved UI readability and visualization
– Includes COMMITTED projects in the calculation (configurable in the Policy / can be turned off)
• Waste Badge & Screen
– Renamed "Reclaimable Capacity”
– Top Reclaimable Capacity offenders
– Templates not included in Reclaimable Capacity calculations (previously, templates were on the Powered Off list)
Capacity Planning – Default Policy Questionnaire
• Default Policy configuration flow
– Asks questions regarding Monitoring Goals when
configuring vSphere adapter for first time
– Configures the Default Policy based on answers
CONFIDENTIAL 54
Capacity Planning
• Modifying Policies
CONFIDENTIAL 55
Capacity Planning – Maintenance Schedules
CONFIDENTIAL 56
• What are maintenance schedules?
– Time periods where no metric collections take place
– Time periods where no analytics are calculated
– Assigned in the policy, and will apply to the groups the policy is assigned to
– Can only select one maintenance schedule per policy
– Can be scheduled / recurring
• How are they different from Custom UI of 5.x
– 5.x was manual – select resource(s), then enable / disable maintenance mode
• No scheduling or recurrence
– Cannot be applied via policy
Projects
Technical Overview
The New “What-If” Tool
• Projects are events that model changing Total
Capacity and/or Usage
• Projects have an event timestamp which can be
applied now or at some point in the future
• Projects can be applied to any containers
• Projects can be
• scheduled as repeating events
• edited, saved, combined and compared
CONFIDENTIAL 57
Creating Projects
• When creating a project you add capacity modeling scenarios
– You can add 1 or more scenarios (Maximum of 5 scenarios per project)
– Different Scenario types:
• Add Capacity: Add percentage of capacity; add Datastore; add Host system
• Change Capacity: Change absolute capacity
• Remove Capacity: Remove percentage of capacity; selected object (object to delete)
• Add Demand: Add percentage of demand; add Virtual Machine
• Change Demand: Change absolute demand
• Remove Demand: Remove percentage of demand; selected object (object to delete)
• Capacity scenarios are Green, Demand scenarios are Blue

CONFIDENTIAL 60
vRealize Operations Manager
Custom Groups and Policies
Custom Groups & Policies
• 6.x
– Single UI for Group and Application creation
– New Policy creation UI
– Policies apply to vSphere and non-vSphere
object types
Much
Better!
• 5.x
– Groups in vSphere UI
– Applications in Custom UI
– Default Policy only
• Must build policies for the out of box policy
templates and apply them to groups
– Policies only applied in vSphere UI to
vSphere Objects
Good.
CONFIDENTIAL 62
Custom Groups
• A group is a container that can contain any number and type of resources
– Groups can by Dynamic or Static
– Groups can be nested
– Policies are assigned to Groups
• When creating a group
– You will assign the group type
• Group Types are a classification that can be given to group, and create your own
– Then define the group criteria
CONFIDENTIAL 63
Policies – Out of the Box
CONFIDENTIAL 64
Policies (Base Settings vs Default Policy)
CONFIDENTIAL 65
• What is the difference between BASE SETTINGS and DEFAULT POLICY?
• BASE SETTINGS is A UNION of all the describe.xml files from all the solutions installed
• Base Settings are NOT changeable
• Default Policy settings ARE changeable.
• Default Policy (and other policies) are human changeable in the UI
• Base Settings are NOT changeable in the UI (modified through solution installation)
• DEFAULT POLICY does inherit from BASE SETTINGS
vRealize Operations Manager
UserAccess Control
User Access Control and Authorization
• 5.x
– Users for vSphere UI (Object Access Control)
– Users / privileges for Custom UI (Privilege
Access Control)
66
• 6.x
– New User Access Control methodology (Both
Object and Privilege Access Control!!!)
– Unified Access Control for the single vROps 6 UI
– vCenter users only for vSphere Objects
– Active Directory and OpenLDAP users for
vSphere and non-vSphere objects
– Local vROps users for vSphere and non-
vSphere objects
Much
Better!
Good.
CONFIDENTIAL
Access Control
WHO can do WHAT to WHAT?
Ex – ‘Joe’ can ‘Power On’ ‘Virtual Machine 1’
User Privilege Objects
CONFIDENTIAL 68
Access Control – During User Group Creation
• During User Group creation, you can assign objects from the different inventory trees
CONFIDENTIAL 69
vRealize Operations Manager
Licensing
License Overview
What Changed
CONFIDENTIAL
• vCenter Server is no longer the License Manager
• License Manager is now in vRealize Operations Manager independent of vCenter deployment
• Easy to manage licensing via simplified UI
• Support for Multiple vROPs Suite license keys in a single vROPs instance
• Ability to deploy multiple licensed solutions pack in a single vROPs instance
• We are also introducing CPU based license counting in addition to the OSI license counting
• New Concepts in License Management
• Evaluation Mode (New; 60 days, ENT features) vs. Temporary Keys (specific to vCenter Operations
Manager – existed previously ) vs. Permanent Product Keys vs. Solution Keys
• Foundation Edition isn’t available for vRealize Operations version 6.0 today. vSphere customers entitled
to use vR Ops 5.x foundation available for download
Note : Foundation is still not guaranteed at this time for the new or future releases of vROps
License Groups
CONFIDENTIAL 71
Like other vRealize Operations Manager groups, you create a license group of
resource objects as a way of gathering those resources for data collections. In this
case, you are associating the objects with a product license.
– How License Keys Work
License groups require that you select one or more keys that you already added for
solution or product activation, and add resource objects as members to a custom group
for those licenses. You might, for example, want to add objects into groups that are
associated with a particular level of license key and monitor or manage by level of key
“in order to control license cost”.
Note : Please remember here that you can’t mix STD keys with ADV or ENT keys.
– Where you can find them?
– In the left pane, select Administration > Licensing and click the License Group tab

Custom Groups & Policies • 6.x – Single UI for Group and Application creation – New Policy creation UI – Policies apply to vSphere and non-vSphere object types Much Better! • 5.x – Groups in vSphere UI – Applications in Custom UI – Default Policy only • Must build policies for the out of box policy templates and apply them to groups – Policies only applied in vSphere UI to vSphere Objects Good. CONFIDENTIAL 62
  • 63. Custom Groups • A group is a container that can contain any number and type of resources – Groups can by Dynamic or Static – Groups can be nested – Policies are assigned to Groups • When creating a group – You will assign the group type • Group Types are a classification that can be given to group, and create your own – Then define the group criteria CONFIDENTIAL 63
  • 64. Policies – Out of the Box CONFIDENTIAL 64
  • 65. Policies (Base Settings vs Default Policy) CONFIDENTIAL 65 • What is the difference between BASE SETTINGS and DEFAULT POLICY? • BASE SETTINGS is A UNION of all the describe.xml files from all the solutions installed • Base Settings are NOT changeable • Default Policy settings ARE changeable. • Default Policy (and other policies) are human changeable in the UI • Base Settings are NOT changeable in the UI (modified through solution installation) • DEFAULT POLICY does inherit from BASE SETTINGS
  • 67. User Access Control and Authorization • 5.x – Users for vSphere UI (Object Access Control) – Users / privileges for Custom UI (Privilege Access Control) 66 • 6.x – New User Access Control methodology (Both Object and Privilege Access Control!!!) – Unified Access Control for the single vROps 6 UI – vCenter users only for vSphere Objects – Active Directory and OpenLDAP users for vSphere and non-vSphere objects – Local vROps users for vSphere and non- vSphere objects Much Better! Good. CONFIDENTIAL
  • 68. Access Control WHO can do WHAT to WHAT? Ex – ‘Joe’ can ‘Power On’ ‘Virtual Machine 1’ User Privilege Objects CONFIDENTIAL 68
  • 69. Access Control – During User Group Creation • During User Group creation, you can assign objects from the different inventory trees CONFIDENTIAL 69
  • 71. License Overview What Changed CONFIDENTIAL • vCenter Server is no longer the License Manager • License Manager is now in vRealize Operations Manager independent of vCenter deployment • Easy to manage licensing via simplified UI • Support for Multiple vROPs Suite license keys in a single vROPs instance • Ability to deploy multiple licensed solutions pack in a single vROPs instance • We are also introducing CPU based license counting in addition to the OSI license counting • New Concepts in License Management • Evaluation Mode (New; 60 days, ENT features) vs. Temporary Keys (specific to vCenter Operations Manager – existed previously ) vs. Permanent Product Keys vs. Solution Keys • Foundation Edition isn’t available for vRealize Operations version 6.0 today. vSphere customers entitled to use vR Ops 5.x foundation available for download Note : Foundation is still not guaranteed at this time for the new or future releases of vROps
  • 72. License Groups CONFIDENTIAL 71 Like other vRealize Operations Manager groups, you create a license group of resource objects as a way of gathering those resources for data collections. In this case, you are associating the objects with a product license. – How License Keys Work License groups require that you select one or more keys that you already added for solution or product activation, and add resource objects as members to a custom group for those licenses. You might, for example, want to add objects into groups that are associated with a particular level of license key and monitor or manage by level of key “in order to control license cost”. Note : Please remember here that you can’t mix STD keys with ADV or ENT keys. – Where you can find them? – In the left pane, select Administration > Licensing and click the License Group tab
