TYPES AND
CHARACTERISTICS
OF A WAVE

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion, the students
shall be able to:
a) explain the definition of wave;
b) determine the types of wave; and
c) describe the characteristics of wave.

VIBRATION
• It is a repeated motion and
produced by a back-and-forth
or up-and-down movement of
an object.

WAVE
• A traveling disturbance that
carries energy from one place
to another with or without a
medium.

MEDIUM
• A substance or material that
carries the wave.

WAVE
• according to presence or absence of a medium.
MECHANICAL ELECTROMAGNETIC

MECHANICAL WAVE ELECTROMAGNETIC
WAVE
It requires a medium
to propagate.
It does not require a
medium to propagate.

WAVE
• according to the direction of motion of the
vibrating particles.
TRANSVERSE
LONGITUDINAL

TRANSVERSE WAVE
• A wave in which particles of the medium
move in a direction perpendicular to the
direction where the wave moves.

LONGITUDINAL WAVE
• A wave in which particles of the medium
move in a direction parallel to the direction
where the wave moves.
