At the end of the lesson:
• Students are able to understand what aesthetics is and how it is
applied in the development stage of the design process
• Students are able to apply aesthetics in their design
What is aesthetics in design?
• In design terms, aesthetics is our perception or opinion of an object
based on what we see, feel, hear, smell and even taste. Our opinion
could be based on one or all of these senses.
1. Shape
• Products are often defined by their shape, some products are very
angular with straight edges and some products use curves to
provide both performance enhancement and attractive aesthetics.
Shape is usually one of the aesthetics that consumers will place
highly on their list when selecting a product. Some products have
such distinctive shapes that they are very recognisable as a
particular brand.
1. Shape – Geometric
1. Shape - Organic
• Organic shapes are shapes that are naturally occurring.
1. Shape - Tessellations
• Tessellations are created when shapes are repeated to form patterns

2. Colour
• Colour can create specific mood/emotion and it helps a product to visually appeal to
the users
2. Colour – Contrasting colour
• Contrasting colour allows attention to be drawn to a particular part of the product
2. Colour – Harmonious colour
• Harmonious colours usually provide a soothing effect. It can be used to bring
together various parts of a product
3. Balance
• Product is said to be visually balanced when the design appears to be equal or both
sides of an imaginary lines
