The use of Information and communication technologies (ICTs) has become the reason a transformation in
the users ‘ perception from what is being hosted in the library to how and when service are rendered to
fulfill their request.
ICT and IT both are parallel concept. Both assembled the technologies like telecommunication due to
IT and ICT there has become phenomenal change in the information collection, preservation and
dissemination scene of the world.
2. MEANING OF ICT
According to Hamelink, “ICT are those technologies that enable the handling of information and facilitate
different forms of communication. It include capturing technologies for e.g. camcorders storage
technologies, CD-ROMs, processing technologies e.g. application software, communication technologies
for e.g. Local Area Networks and display technologies like Computer Monitor.
Information and communication technology is the set of technological tools and resources used to
communicate and to create, disseminate, store and manage information.
3. BENEFITS OF FUNCTIONS OF ICT BASED LIBRARY SERVICES
Generally computers in library have been used to automate the following functions.
• Acquisition and budget
• Cataloguing and short loans
• Circulation

• Serial control
• OPAC etc.
The ICT products and services are beneficial for the libraries.
• It saves the time of service providers
• It takes small space to save the information.
• It save the energy and resources
• It helps to control the information
• Due to ICT librarians can give more information in time.
Since the 1950s use of ICT in libraries has basically gene through four stage, corresponding to the
major reasons for automating.
• Improving the efficiency of internal operations.
• Improving access to local library resources.
• Providing access to resources outside the library.
• Interoperability of information system.
4. THE CURRENT TRENDS
Library is vast store house of information. Emergence of internet and communication technology (ICT)
libraries has been acquiring different approaches of the same and mode of service is changed.
5. TRANSFORMING THE KNOWLEDGE INTO DIGITAL CONTENTS
During the classical period, distinction was drawn between libraries, archives and museums. The chief task
of all sections of these institutions was the collection and preservation of documents. The library
departments looked after the collection of the written word, whether on clay tablets, as in the Babylonian
empire or on papyrus rolls, as in Egypt. But now the condition has been change. In this digital age, the
overwhelming majority of newly created information is digital. Moving from a hand-on, real-life learning
experience of substance to a digital version of it presents many interesting challenges depending on what
the goals are, several models are possible.
5.1. Digital Archives
Digital technologies increasingly serve to integrated information resource. Text numeric data, image, voice
and video have heretofore resided in print or other analogue media for storage and transmission.
Multimedia and hyperlinked objects on the World Wide Web represent some of the new kinds of
information and new ways of knowing in the digital that bring together and traditional from to information
and transform their use.
5.2. Benefits of Digital Archives
• Flexibility of the digital material.
• Digital archives are very useful to save the place.
• It saves a lot of time of the users in searching of information.
• Easy to access the information and content.

6. ICT BASED USERS SERVICES
Due to information explosion information are coming out in electronic format. Users are also advent.
Research scholars are now want the information in not only hard copies, but they want in electronic format
too. As required the users, so many libraries are adopting electronic habits. They using the web, Intranet,
Extranet and other technologies too to preserve and disseminate the information.
Now a days ICT is used in various fields of library activities to enhance users satisfaction. It provides
numerous benefits to the users.
• ICT provides unlimited information from different sources.
• It provide the information easily and speedily.
• It facilitated the reformatting and combining of data from different sources.
• ICT provides remote access to users.
With the help of ICT, libraries are also providing various ICT based services to the users.
Which are given below:-
6.1. Web 2.0
Web 2.0 is the term gives to describe a second generation of the World Wide Web that is focus on the
ability for people to collaborate and share information online. Web 2.0 basically refers to the transition
from static HTML web pages to a more dynamic web that is more organized and is based on serving web
applications to users. Other improved functionality of web 2.0 includes open communication with an
emphasis on web based communities of users & more open sharing of information. Over time web 2.0 has
been used more as a marketing term than a computer science-based term. Blogs, Wikis & web services are
all seen as components as web 2.0.
Web access to OPACs: - With the help of Web-based Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) users can
learn how to use one universal access client, the web browser.
Online Instructions:-The Web Browsers are helping to librarians to implementing online based
bibliographic or library use programmes. It provides online tutorials on searching online resources and
virtual tours of library collections.
Electronic document delivery:-ICT based services has become helpful to the libraries to deliver the
copies of journals and other documents in digital format mainly in portable document format (PDF) to the
library users.
6.2. Web 2.0 Tools and Applications
Web 2.0 tools are:-
Wikis: - It is powerful content management system. It allows any one add a new article or revise an
existing article through a web browser. It is an ideal for students and researchers and support staff for
collaborative work allowing focus and content. Wikis are as knowledge management tools. It’s work as
public knowledge repositories.
Flickr:- It is a social network for showing photos with the help of Flickr users can work together to photo
projects and use each other tags to find new photos Flickr enables users to contribute organize, share and
discuss photos .
Podcast:- The podcast like broadcast, it is a series of digital media files which are distributed over the
internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers.

7. IMPACT OF ICT ON LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS
ICT has brought tremendous changes in library services. Today’s highly sophisticated information
technology to facilitate the storage of huge amounts of data or information in a very compact space.
Information technologies promise fast retrieval of stored information and revolutionized our concept of the
functions of a traditional library and a modern information center.
ICT is changing the various aspects of libraries and the information profession. Advantages of ICT are
resulting in digital information sources and digital media replacing and becoming the dominant form of
information storage and retrieval. Now it has become easy to access the digital information resources
without any restriction to specified hours and day of the week like a physical library. ICT are also
implementing the rules of library and information science which had given by Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the
father of Library and Information science.
8. CONCLUSION
ICT has bring the new changes in the whole world of information. Computer and new technologies has
brought revolution in knowledge society. It changed the thinking the of the people and way of interaction.
It affected the life of everyone in every field. World most population is shifting from ‘techno-illiterate’ to
‘techno-literate’. Without the ICT libraries and information centers cannot move a single step. In the ICT
world professions also adopted the new technologies to develop the every field.
